So my little Bantam rooster Miroku's eyes where swollen shut this morning.
I dabbed at them with a damp piece of paper towel and they where pretty sealed shut but I managed to get them open and a weird watery grey liquid came out now it's all bubbly, his whole face is sort of puffy too but he seems fine otherwise, I've helped him drink water by dipping his beak in and he is eager, he will try and move away if he hears me so he's pretty much his normal self.

I had another rooster who did something similar to this and I put him in a cage with essential oils that help with breathing and it was cleared up by the next morning but I'm not sure if this is the same thing or not.

Any ideas? some cream or something I could put on his eyes so they don't crust shut again would be nice.

I'm not exactly sure what it may be. But to bring the swelling down you could use a steeped cooled chamomile tea bag, and press gently on his eye with and do it every day till the swelling goes down.

Anybody else know what this may be?

That sounds like a good idea, I'll try it!:thumbsup

Any coughing, sneezing, mucous from the nostrils or difficulty breathing?

It looks like he may have a respiratory illness.
Facial swelling along with bubbly eyes could be an indication of Mycoplasma, but without testing, there's no way to know for sure.

Flush the eyes with saline, try to remove any discharge or pus that you might see and apply some Terramycin eye ointment or Vetericyn eye gel.

Sometimes you may need to adminster antibiotics, but these will only treat secondary infections associated with illness.

It's possible that it could be infection from something else like dust/debris, molds, ammonia buildup from poor ventilation or injury, but since it's both eyes, most likely it's a respiratory illness.

Keep him hydrated, add some poultry vitamins to his water and keep him eating. If you have a vet or state lab that can run some tests to give you some answers that would be a good idea.

Keep us posted.

I haven't noticed any funny breathing yet, I called our local feed store and they only have the poultry vitamins but no Terramycin or vertericyn for eyes, would the regular Vetercyn spray work for it?

You could do some research to see if you are comfortable using regular Vetericyn spray in the eyes. I can't say one way or the other whether it's safe or not.

Some people do use plain Neosporin in the eyes as well, but again, that would be your decision to make after doing some reading.
I'll read up on it :) thank you

Still pretty swollen today, I put polysporn on it and although I can't really see into the eye and tell I came across a picture of eye worms and was wondering if it could be them.

So the eyes can open now, we found that he had lice and they where crawling all over his eyes at night:oops: so we dusted him and put vaseline on his head around the eyes to smoother them, we used some TOBRADEX 0.3% cream left over from the dog since I could not find anything for chickens since apparently you can't get much for them in Canada:hitHe's pretty weak right now since the only food/water I can get into him is what I dip the end of his beak in so I have been feeding him as much egg as possible. However his eyes are less puffy and he is now opening them by himself.:)
