Rooster with eyes swollen closed!

I'm glad he is able to open the eyes.

Try to get rid of the lice. If you can, use a permethrin based poultry spray or dust. I think I remember seeing where it may not be available in Canada, if it's not you can use Carbyl (sevin).

Do the best you can to keep him hydrated, if he will eat the egg that's good.

@Wickedchicken6 You're in Canada right? What do you use for lice?

Sorry I'm late. I'm trying to catch up from yesterday and I got interrupted by hubby halfway through this...lol.
Excellent descriptions of your roosters condition, Wolfsbane.:thumbsup

@Wolfsbane @Wyorp Rock

Yes, I'm in Canada, but I haven't dealt with lice, yet. Carbaryl "poultry dust" would probably be the best choice here.

Dusting Powder 5%

Indications:
A formulation containing 5% carbaryl, Dusting Powder is indicated to kill ticks, lice, fleas, and hornflies on cattle, sheep, hogs, and horses; Northern fowl mite, chicken mites, lice, and fleas on chickens, turkeys, ducks, geese, and domestic game birds.

Chickens, turkeys, ducks, geese, and domestic game birds:
  • For litter treatment, apply 122 g/m². Use a scoop and scatter, or apply by dusting.
  • Avoid contaminating nests, eggs, feeding, and water troughs.
  • For application to birds as a supplement to litter treatment, use 4.5 g/bird. Apply by shaker can or hand duster. Direct the dust to vent and fluff areas.
  • Repeat in 4 weeks if necessary
I've found this dusting powder in the co op feedstores, TSC farm stores, Peavey marts...even independant farm stores. I attached a link to the DVL website so you can see what they carry. Most of their products, such as vitamins and oral antibiotics seem to be covered in most feed stores I've been in. So far it's been very effective for mites for me. It's decently priced at $18-$24 depending on where you can get it.

Permethrin concentrate is available for livestock, and poultry is on label as well.

Looking at the link, I see it mentions a pesticide licence is required...so I have a sinking feeling that it may not be available in all provinces unless you have a licence. Manitoba & Saskatchewan do not need a licence. Beyond that I'm unsure.

In regards to the eyes, I just picked up a medicated eye drop solution from my Walmart pharmacy. It's at home but I'm almost positive it is polysporin eye drops. It's a pink box. This would be off label...but you're treating a rooster, I can't see it would be an issue since he isn't laying eggs and you're probably not going to be eating him. I haven't tried it yet...but I bought it for a hen I have in case it's needed.

I also use something else for eye infections, but it's off label and unless you have cattle...you're vet probably isn't going to sell it to you. Our old vet suggested to use regular mastitus ointment for eye infections...works incredibly well.

If you have any other questions I can help you with as far as drugs/treatments we have in Canada...I'll definite try to help.:)

I might be able to get it since my dad owns a landscaping company and I believe he has a pesticide license, I'm using that dust which I picked up From North York Farmers and dusted him already, he won't keep his eyes open for long any recommendations on how I can make the eye less painful for him?

And where can I buy regular mastitus ointment?

It may take some time before he wants to keep the eye open. It probably feels better while he's keeping it closed. I think time and drops. Even regular drops will help keep the eye clean and help soothe it.

Are you west Canada or east Canada? I think in the west you may be okay as far as being able to buy the permethrin. If not, that may work with your father having a pesticide licence. We're going to purchase permethrin in case the laws change here to require a licence.

We buy the ointment from directly from the vet. It used to be over the counter, but not any more, at least in Manitoba. We have cattle, that's how I source it from our vet. I'm thinking they probably will not sell you mastitus ointment for eyes. I'm unsure if it can be purchased over the internet.

Also...did the dust work for the lice? So far Carbaryl has been very deadly for the bugs here.

You'd have to be very careful around the eyes. I dust the muffs and beards of my birds.

Eastern Canada close to Toronto.

I had my brother shield his head when I dusted him to keep it out of his eyes but it seems to be working well, at first they all ran to hide on his head but when we slathered it with vaseline they all disappeared.

And does anyone know if I can a use plain Polysporn on the eye? or just the pink eye drops?

Oh yes, that's right.

I don't think I'd use plain polysporin, but I'm not 100% certain. @Wyorp Rock

If you can get Polysporin Ophthalmic Ointment, that would work, but I would not use plain Polysporin in the eye. Some people use plain Neosporin in the eye if nothing else is available. Be sure to keep they eye flushed out with saline or sterile water.

Hopefully getting the lice taken care of will help with the eye - I wonder if he scratched his eye since they were on his head - a scratch can introduce bacteria to the eye which in turn can cause infection.

Keep us posted.
