Roosters and Grumpy Neighbors

My head roo is an EE and he pretty much crows throughout the day. My neighbors all have roosters so when one starts, there is a crow-fest.

Keep in mind that hens of laying age can also be quite noisy so now is the time to figure out if poultry are allowed where you live. If they are not, the pre-egg-squawk of a hen can get on the nerves of an intolerant neighbor.

Anybody know how loud an EE is? I think my EE may be a little roo. I am pretty sure the rest are pullets though.

All of my loudest, most persistent crowers have been EEs. I rehomed a gorgeous one last year because he crowed all day, every day. Sometimes 20-30 crows in a row. Drove me absolutely nuts!

All birds are different, though. You'll have to see what his personality is.

I'm just impressed by all the crowers in this thread that are sleeping in until 6. I'd love that! My big roo likes to start around 5:15.

I'd rather hear a rooster crow than a persistent dog barking any day of the week. But I know what you're going through. I've had to get rid of a rooster because of neighbors myself. It's legal, there's nothing legally they could do, but I value peace with my neighbors. But in hindsight, he was the tastiest one I ever had.

#1--determine whether or not you are allowed to have roos--if you're not supposed to have them, then get rid of the roos (don't wait for someone to complain)

#2--If you can have roos, decide if you want to keep them, then work with the neighbors--sharing eggs is always a nice gesture. (Our EE's are loud and we share our eggs with the immediate neighbors.)

I guess I wonder why you would order 27 chickens not knowing if you were getting roosters or not, especially if you haven't looked into the laws of your town/county.

In my opinion, the hens are louder then the roosters. Ever hear a flock of laying hens announce the arrival of an egg?
I agree that hens can be noisy. My neighbor's hens always sing a glorious egg song each morning (which I do enjoy). My hens are as quiet as can be when they lay - not sure why. My two roos, however, are loud. My little bantam Belgian d'Anver crows like a big guy.....all day. He and our OEGB have dueling crowing sessions all about the lawn. My birds begin the day around 5:00 AM! I love it as I and my husband are morning folks. My neighbors, however, aren't......

Galanie, I apologize if I sounded rude. We are a rescue and I've taken chickens/roos from the shelters because people purchase them without knowing the laws then can't get rid of them and dump them. Especially roos, it is extremely hard to sell or give away roos. When a neighbor doesn't like something that can be as bad as the law saying you can't have them. They complain until you have no choice but to get rid of them. I'm just saying there are far too many unwanted, unable to keep animals in shelters. We need to check with our laws and our neighbors BTW, my roosters crow from sun up til sun down and the clucking that comes from my hens sends me running just to make sure everyone is ok. Good luck and once your neighbors tastes those eggs they will fall in love. Sorry, didn't mean to ruffle feathers, joking!

That's quite alright. But it didn't sound like a joke at all. And the first post said they ordered all girls. But you know they do make mistakes sexing chicks at hatcheries and that's what happened. This is not a case of someone purposely getting roosters then panicking about having to get rid of them. It was accidental.
