Rooster's comb and waddle are turning black

I think my rooster might be having the same problem. Not sure I can catch him to put the Vaseline on. We have been super cold the last few days here in VA... I don't know what to do.

Yeah i am in central VA, never had a problem till these 2 degree nights. I have a hen with an exceptionally large comb that is blackening. It's a kick in the tail after putting so much thought and planning in to building my coop to get good ventilation. I heated it last night but I doubt the 17 degree days are helping either.

Yes it is sad, but it happens to all of us. My morning temperature today was 20 below zero F, which is much colder than usual here. I was able to keep my coop temp at 11 with heat lamps, but still had a couple of cases. The larger the comb, the more chances of frostbite. That's why smaller combed breeds are popular in colder climates.

Not frostbite I am in west Africa but started yesterday and is way worst today with the blacks spots any ideas. Free range chicken except at night due to predators. Any ideas

My baby is a chick and no frost bite cause she has still been inside with a heat lamp. What could be causing this?

How far away is the heat lamp from the chicks? Heat lamps should be 18 inches or higher away from the chicks, or they could be burned. What are your air temperatures where the brooder is kept? What is the brooder temperature? Could the comb be discolored from something in the bedding or brooder?

I didn't know it had to be 18 inches they are in house. We don't have the heater on or a/c. They are in a clear bin. Can it be cured. Their coop is coming on Tuesday since they will be 7 weeks this coming week. Outside goes from 55-70 its been real windy this week. But inside sometimes is cold but not freezing. More like 70-73

I would apply some silvadene cream from a vet, if your vet will give you a prescription. Don't use any Vaseline-based ointments such as Neosporin or Bacitracin on the comb, since the heat lamp can still burn. If you can't get Silvadene, then use some iodine on it. It's hard to say if it will heal, but it shouldn't kill her. The lamp looks better. They usually work better overhead, but make sure the temperature is where you want it by using a cheap thermometer on the floor.

As long as she still lives I'm happy. I will ask a vet if I could get one. Thank you so much!!!
