Rooster's comb is bleeding

Starting stages of frostbite, and the bigger the comb, the easier they get it. Rub the vaseline or A&D ointment on it. Try to get it once a week if you can catch the little guy, it'll help protect it.

ETA: Really cold bitter weather and you may have to do it every couple days, just think of it like chapstick.

As you can see, C.C.'s comb is Big, and a little dark on the tip.

Yes, I am having comb trouble too! UGH! My beautiful Buff Orpington is loosing his comb... I am in Maine, so it is fairly cold here. It is almost impossible to prevent or treat it without bringing him in the house (not an option for me). So, I just decided to let nature take its course the way it would if he were a "wild" chicken! I didn't know that bleeding was involved! I thougth it just fell off! I will have to watch for that!

I don't think it will bleed unless infection starts up, but jlj your roo doesn't look that bad. you can put some neosporin 0n it or vaseline but it will probably be fine just keep an eye on it in case of infection. the blk part will fall off.

C.C. is much better today, we kept him inside all day yesterday.
The temp. today is going to be in the 40's and the rest of the week, so we might let him out for a few hours each day.
I am keeping the ointment on him.

My white rock hen had a bleeding comb this morning too. It got down to about 17 last night and I went to check them all this morning and the poor girl's head was just covered in blood. It was a bit shocking and I thought the others were picking on her (which never has happened, she's high in the order) - she just looked awful. Everyone else was fine. Of course, her being white made it look like she just escaped from Norman Bate's hotel room!

The coop must have gotten cold last night. I thought it would be fine with the doors closed and the vents just cracked for some air (roof/soffit vents, no drafts)
I took her inside and washed her off and there was nothing wrong with her except the tips of her comb were oozing blood at a good rate. I used some superglue and sealed the tips to stop the bleeding. Need to get some vaseline today but this week is going to warm up so hopefully everyone else will be okay. She has a large, floppy comb so it doesn't surprise me she had a touch of frostbite. Luckily all my other chicken have smaller combs.
Here where I am in NC we generally don't get this cold for so long but it has been a strange winter so far. Lesson learned, need to protect those combs for the rest of the winter.

Glad to hear CC is doing better. Yep really starting out this winter alot like last year, My one Roo has a big single comb for being little, and so far so good. My other roos comb flops over instead of standing up so hopefully he'll be okay too. Nice to know we're going to be a tad warmer as the week goes by.....

Hi,

My rooster comb is bleeding this morning, so I decided to isolate him in the coop. I will put flour to stop the bleeding, but have to wait tonight cause he won't let me close to him ( usual behavior) in your post you said that you learned your lesson and will protect the comb from now on... how ? and should I do that for the hens as well ( got 21 of them... )

my rooster worry me though, yes maybe it's frost bite, but he hasn't feeling well for the past 2 days, thought he had problem going to bathroom... read on internet that oastmeal and garlic help. So everybody had oatmeal-garlic meal and garlic water ( since the hens didn't really seems to let him eat... ) he was not secure on his legs.. poor thing ... I feel so bad. and I am 200 km from town, so going and buy stuff for him is almost impossible, as well as asking the vet to look at him. So tonight I'm gonna try with the flour, and since he is isolated I'm just hoping for the best. ( now I'm worry about eating the eggs and / or eat the one for meat... ) any advice ? thanks !

We just noticed our rooster, the only one, has bleeding on his comb. We live in Texas and its hot, so no frostbite but it does look dar when it dries. Its only a little bit but I can't figure out what happened. Do you think the hens might have done it? Why would they just all of a sudden start pecking at him after all this time together? Might it be bc he is trying to mate with them all day long? (that is a serious question, actually).

Hi,

I don't have a lot of experience yet, so I can't figure out why your rooster is bleeding..
but if he is, now the hens are gonna poke at him, you probably should isolate him...

Good luck,

Nathalie
