Roosters crow at night???

Roosters crow. Morning, afternoon, night. Sunrise, sunset, moonrise, full moon, car headlights, dog barking, whatever. I often hear mine crowing in the early am, and more often during a full moon. Makes me wonder when they sleep!

Ours crow every morning starting between 4am and 5am. If something spooks them at night or if the lights from the house shine in their windows they will crow for what can seem like an eternity! When the coyotes call though, I've noticed our girls will throw a ruckus before the boys crow. (gives us a heads up to get ready for them I guess!)

This is the 2nd time in 2 months...so it's not out of control or anything but just wondering why he's doing it! Glad to know I'm not the only one with this problem! I haven't heard a peep since I went out there

Something is definitely wrong with your rooster if you've heard him crow twice at night in the last 2 months. You should not tolerate this type of abnormal behavior and cull him immediately and get a normal rooster that crows at all hours of the day & night, every night of the week.
Hope this helps.

No need to cull a rooster that crows at night roosters crow because its a Territorial thing mine used to crow VERY early but now he just crows when the other roosters start to crow around my house so being that you say something wrong with the rooster and need to be culled is pointless what if that rooster is gorgeous

Oh and yes when something does startle them they will crow or sound the alarm to the hens mine never crows at night though

I'm sure that was meant to be a joke.

Funny. I think I'm with ChickenLegs13 on this one, roosters that crow whenever and where ever they want to, for whatever reason they want to, if there is even a reason, are easy to find, that's most of them. One that only crows when he is supposed to, meaning when people want them to (if ever), are as scarce as hen's teeth.

I just think something startled him...never going to "cull" him he's an awesome rooster! Just surprised me last night! Thanks tho for all the input! Backyard has been so helpful and full of amazing info!
