Rooster's severely infected shanks! What should I do?

Gosh, I am not sure. I would call around, make sure you see an avian vet and ask what their office exam costs. You can almost guarantee if the exam is a high price anything they do or meds will be higher too. Maybe you can find a fair price vet and I have found in my search there are major differences in prices with vets. Also, if they do want to give any medicine and there is a human version of the same, you could ask for them to write a script and get it at walmart. Just an idea to help save some money. I do it for my dog and if I need to I will check on it for my chickens too.
Please keep us posted! When will you be taking him? We all are learning and we learn from our mistakes so don't beat yourself up to badly! You are seeking help now!

I do care for him a lot. Even though we're not closely acquainted as close friends, he's one of the calmest roosters and most respectful towards his hens and me. I've had him for almost 5-7years. I'll check those threads out right now!
I didn't know that; I thought you could easily make a cut and flush out the abscess. Is it because their tissues are tougher than humans?

My girlfriend and I did tried to perform surgery on him; we were careful to sanitize everything. I cut the infected area open with a sharp razor blade in a downward motion, but then when it came to squeeze out the puss it was like pressing onto a rock. I was shocked and later became dispirited.

Spending a $100 is not that expensive concerning the price of his overall health. (How disgraceful it will be for me to show up at the vet and tell them that I didn't bother to take care of my rooster.) The animal hospital that I'm going to have vets who specialize in chickens. I hope they can do something.
Yeah, your totally right. Your last sentence filled me up with a sense of encouragement.

I only know of one place where they provide treatment for chickens. I'll search around the web and see who can assist me.

''Also, if they do want to give any medicine and there is a human version of the same, you could ask for them to write a script and get it at walmart.''

I would have never asked them about this if you didn't mention this. Great piece of advice.
Amazing. What do you give your dog and for what situation? I think this method can help a lot of people if they follow the correct procedures.

This time I will keep everyone posted. I've realized or came to understand that this website is wonderful.
This week I don't think I can take him because my parents just paid the rent and we- I guess- barely have enough to buy market for this week. That's what I understood from what my father said. But still, I need to ask him what's going on.

haha thanks your very kind
But still there are no excuses for my actions

I have to try to help him, no matter what.

I feel the same way when it comes to any of my better stud Roosters, I do whatever it will takes.

UPDATE: I just called the animal hospital; the primary one I was talking about going to. I was uneasy about speaking to someone, you could tell if you were listening, and the price for an examination is $65.50. I've went there once and I believe their services and faculty know what they are doing, so I might not be taken aback by their price. I still have to keep looking around...

I asked about lost cost payments and they said I can fill something out online or in person. I haven't yet found the the form on their website.
Here is a link to the hospital:
http://www.vcahospitals.com/adler/our-hospital.html

I was only asked a few simple questions such as: ''Where is the infection?'' and ''How bad is the infection?''.

I clicked on the box on the bottom right, "free first exam". They DO have an option for bird in the breed section. SEE, you just saved $65.50.
Now fill the rest out!

For my dog I give him Prozac and the doggy version of prozac is crazy in price $80 for his dosage and Walmart is only $4! (My English Bulldog was a rescue and has some major issues! ) LOL He has also gotten Keflex, an antibiotic which is the exact same as the human one and that is also $4 at Walmart. I also had been prescribed Bactrim for one of my pullets and this is a human antibiotic. I did choose to get this one from the vet, just because I didn't feel like running to Walmart that day but I am sure that would have been another $4 prescription. I am sure there are alot more. One I can think of is prednisone which is very cheap and I believe alot of the antibiotics can be used on animals. If they prescribe something, just ask if this is one that you might be able to get at Walmart. It will help to save on the costs.
Have you tried any of the antibiotics that are available at the feed store. I would try to use like an antibiotic ointment at least twice a day until you are able to have him seen.

I have taken chickens to the VCA here and the avian vet there was very good so I hope you have the same experience where you are. Yes, there is something they do participate in to help you with the payments but I forget the name of it. I believe it might work along the same line as a loan but I am not sure. Maybe someone who has used this service can let you know how it works.

Oh forgot to add that there were 2 occasions that the vet at the VCA hospital decided to not charge me for the exam and only for the services he provided which was very nice of him!!! He is a chicken lover though!

I wouldn't get your hopes up about saving the $65. Looks like it is only for new clients. Plus you have to be 18 or older and it says for dogs and cats only (but check with your local vet for other animals)
You could put it in your girlfriends name (if she is 18)
Care credit is a credit card that some vets will take. It can be used for both human and pets medical care. I have found that vets that have lower fees don't accept the care credit card.
I had a $600 vet bill and used care credit. It only cost $25 a month. They have different interest and payment plans. Not sure what mine was the the interest was very low (you had to charge a certain amount)
Had I have gone to a different vet perhaps my bill wouldn't have been as high ?? I'm not exactly sure but in the long run $25 was more then affordable. Unfortuneately the cat and dog that I had used the care credit on have passed away

Good luck and keep us posted !! Hope you find some advice unde the bumblefoot threads. You may have to treat him systemically if the infection has traveled into his thigh.

You can buy cattle penicillin at the farm stores. Takes a big needle however because it is thick although I'm not sure what antibiotic to use for that. The bumblefoot thread will have that I'm sure.
