Roosters that attack?

Roosters can be gentle and tame. Some are just naturally more aggressive for some reason. If you have them and handle them every day you can raise perfectly nice roosters. Don't let this one mean roo spoil you on them all together.

Yes, most of the time a rooster gets mean it is from lack of handling, and he is afraid of people, thus causing him to attack out of fear. Some roosters you can't fix, others you can. I have some tips on my site to help correct this behavior HERE if you want to try to sooth him. If you have a rooster that has this kind of behavior, it is a good idea to keep children away from them, just to be safe. You can also trim its spurs to avoid getting stabbed. Good luck!

Thanks. The strange thing is this rooster has been handled since it was itty bitty chick by her kids?
I think rooster scare the hell out of me (total novice). I'm good with mean large animals, but darn, any type of mean bird freaks me. I do want a little rooster at some point so I probably will try at some point. I'll, hopefully get some good advice or aopt a nice one down the line.

Well, as I said, sometimes they just get that way, even if you have done everything right. 99% of roosters will be very docile if they were handled a lot growing up, but there is always that 1% that won't, and a nice tame rooster can turn into one of these for no apparent reason. If I get a true manfighter, I put him in the freezer, as this can be a trait that he can pass on to his offspring, and I have no room for them on my farm.

Thats when my brother was little my mom had a flock of chickens for eggs and they had this white rooster well my brother was about two so i wasn't born yet and he went up to toddle around with are pony and my mom was watching him and all of a sudden my rooster went after my brother and was jumping up and try to spur close to his face. So my mom grabs a golf club and wacks the rooster and grabs my brother and checked his eyes and face. He was fine but scared. So that night when my dad came home my mom sent my dad out to take care of the rooster. Because she didn't want to risk another attack on my brother and have him go blind fron the spurs and any such thing for she new if that had happend she could never for giver her self.

YIKES!

My rooster attacked one of my hens very badly. Pretty much ripped off all of the flesh on the back of her neck. Mine are in a large chicken yard, so that probably did not help, but it was awful. Funny thing, he was tame with me and my family. I have heard of roosters being aggressive. Unless you want to have baby chicks, it is much more peaceful to just not have a rooster in the long run, in my own opinion. The girls are much happier without one climbing on them all of the time.

I have my own story. I was asked to feed a friends chickens while they were on gone for the holidays. It was Christmas morning and dh and I were on our way to my mothers. I was wearing a skirt and high heels (normally I'm in jeans and boots). The job was easy, fill their water container and add check food levels. My dh sat in the car and watched (naturally). All of a sudden the rooster decided he did not want me around his hens and took off after me. All I remember was running in my heels all around the yard as my dh sat in the front seat of our car and laughed. He thought it was the funniest thing in the world. This was a teeny rooster and could not have done much damage except, maybe, snag my stockings.
Needless to say I finally manged to jump in car and my dh spent the rest of the day telling the story. When I told my friend when she returned she mentioned he hated ANYTHING sparkly. Well, I would not have worn my heels (with sparkly rhinestone flowers at toes) HAD I KNOW THAT!

p.s. BTW, by no means do I want this to be a rooster bashing thread. I think they are great and it's only, i'm sure, a select few who get out of control. Thanks everyone for the feedback. I honestly did not know they could actually do that much damage! Wow...tough little fighters when they want to be.

All of our roosters are very friendly, but that's becuase we handle them alot. Also, if you carry them around, it's kind of like putting them nto a submissive posture so they know you're boss. But that is pretty typical rooster behavior, sorry she had to go through it.
