Rose growers thread!

I was going to say that, being in Florida, you should check out some of the smaller Chinas , Teas and Polyanthas . I haven't ever bought from them, but Vintage Gardens' website is pretty awesome in that they give an image of the general growth characteristics of their varieties. If you look through the China, Tea and Polyantha varieties there and find some that are low-growing, you can then look them up on HelpMeFind for more information. When you've made the selections you like, if Vintage doesn't have them available this season (they don't propagate everything every season, but do offer a "custom root" option for more money), you can check into some of the other nurseries online. I've had great experience with Rogue Valley Roses, and they do have a nice selection, but no one has as many of the old garden roses as Vintage (at least as far as I know).

I ordered them from Chamblees. Ive ordered from them before and have been very satisfied with the plants, and their prices cant be beat.

Thanks for all the good info your posting. I guess everyone has a passion that makes them come from out of the woods to start posting here!

Here is a pretty double rose I got from a Kellogg fertilizer rep when it first came out, a friend of the family. Despite 2 years of being eaten to sticks by goats, it keeps coming back, this is a week ago, and I forget the name, but it was named after one of the daughters I believe.

This is Mary Rose, I had to buy it because of the name, and planted it under my DDs window to keep her from going out the window!

I love it, hardy, drought resistant, and good scent.

And this is the beautiful little Cecile Brunner, I have it growing against the front of my house, so much better behaved than the Fairy Rose!

I will post pics of my commoners (hybrid teas) and other English roses when they grow back from being deer snacks.

I have always loved Cecile Brunner! I have one that I almost let the drought get before I realized that it needed water. Whew, so glad I saved it, I think I like it better even than Duchesse du Brabant.

Oh, I don't mind gardening in the rain, I've been out weeding in it daily. The ground is too wet to dig though, and our soil is heavy enough to create 'bowls'. It's sunny today, although there's more rain in the forecast

I'll prolly plant them in the next day or so.
My Mannigton Mauve rambler is loaded with buds

Wow! Roses and chickens! Who knew! Thanks for this thread. Yes, I love roses, and I am up to about 40 now. I have had them for years. I have done the Rose society meetings and shows. Even won some prizes. Rose shows are funny. It is really a matter of who has what blooming on what day. My favorite saying is, Where is the Rose Show when I need one??

If I learned anything over the years it is MULCH, MULCH, MULCH. I use the small-sized black Nitrogen treated fir bark mulch. It looks good and adds nitrogen to soil. I add about 4-6" deep about every other year. I don't spray or use anything anymore. Just the systemic fertilizer in the winter when I prune back after new year. I live in Northern California. I add it before a good storm hits and let the rain put it in.
I have many old roses, DAs, etc. and today it looks like Heaven has bloomed.
My favorite is Madame Alfred Carriere. probably mispelled. great rose. not a cutter just a beauty.
thanks!
