Rose growers thread!

I love the Antique Rose Emporium, all of my roses are from there. I have a Buff Beauty or Reve d'Or climber (I ordered one, and they subbed the other, and now I can't remember) that is 30 feet up into a live oak. It puts on a glorious show every spring. I have a Cramoise Superiour (sorry about the spelling) that blooms and grows vigoriously in far too much shade. I have a pinky climber, and a fair rose in the side yard and in the front I have Hermosa, Highway 290 or Pink Buttons, and two others that I can't remember the names of now. The ones in the front were new last year, and have bloomed well this spring. I love the ease of old roses and all of mine are repeat bloomers, with the two climbers having a very moderate fall bloom.

Hi, I love the idea of roses growing up trees! I have several old oak trees that throw a lot of shade and limit what I can plant there. How close to the roots do you plant these? How exactly do you plant a rose near enough to a tree to have it climb, and do they need to be attached to the tree somehow to train them to climb? Im off to check out the antique rose emporium!

Growing roses into trees is one of my dreams! I have several ramblers that I got from Paul Zimmerman when he still sold roses, I'm going to attempt to root some cuttings, and try it. Looking forward to learnng how you do this, Mom'sFolly!

This is just one of several links I found when I googled "growing roses into trees".

I didn't do it on purpose. This rose was described as a "nearly thornless, moderate climber". Mine isn't following the rules. Railroad spikes are shorter and softer than this thing's thorns and it is a very vigorous climber. I planted it when both it and the tree were smaller. I had it trellised on 6' privacy fencing, and as the tree and shade grew the rose went towards the sun, first out along the fence, then up the neighboring 8 foot fence and into the tree. I'm not quite sure how it all happened. It's root ball and base canes are completely shaded, and the rose is well into the oak tree. It has hundreds of flowers in the spring, which unfortunately, I can't see with out walking out behind my shed and into the coop area. I think from the description it is probably Reve d'Or. The pillar roses at the Antique Rose Emporium are gorgeous. If you can do this in your yard, I would highly recommend the look.

Around here, I see a lot of old Lady Banks roses that have grown into trees. I love the way they look when the have plenty of room to grown and just kind of droop over to the ground. The main down side to these is that they are only spring bloomers.

I want to add that when my chickens free range they eat the leaves from the roses. They prefer the flavor of one rose over all others, they eat the pinky climber like it is candy. They literally jump up as high as they can to get its leaves. They leave the other roses pretty much alone. Just something to think about if your chooks and flowers are sharing space.

Grrr.....this morning I found my two Eugene de Beauharnais missing. They were growing in pots that I placed on my front doorstep. It's "study week" so the annoying college kids are rambunctious and out in full force. Just plain annoying. They weren't even much to look at now, just barely beginning to leaf out from small bare twigs. I emailed the head of my block club to pass on the word. Last year, one of my pots disappeared and reappeared. A neighbor found it in her yard and knew that it belonged with the others in front of my house, so she just put it back on her own. I'm hoping the same thing happens this time. And, well, if not, I'll just buy them again -- AFTER I move out of this horrible place.
