Rose growers thread!

thanks, but remember that pic was taken last August! Anyway, I get bare roots every year and they always bloom the first year. Just water a lot and fertilize well. What are you getting?

I live in Northern Wisconsin so keeping roses can be a challenge. I have 23 bushes. Most are grandiflora or floribunda. I have considered getting some David Austin roses, but haven't done so. I am also thinking I need "Heaven on earth". I don't think I can even name all the ones I have. About Face, Flirtatious, Melody Parfumee, Tuscan Sunset, Fragrant Cloud, Mr Lincoln, Moondance, Super Hero, Simply Marvelous, Knock Out, Carefree Sunshine, Cherish . . . That's all I can remember right now. I've tried Blue Girl and John F Kennedy and they just aren't hardy enough. The Easy Elegance rose Super Hero is wonderful for this climate! I am getting 10 more to plant around my house this spring. I don't even need to cover them in the winter!

never did much for roses my mom is the rose lover but once o saw this one type of rose i just had to have it and that got me started hahaha
neighbors look at me weird seeing a 20 year old cutting roses

i have Sentimental Floribunda Rose 4 large bushes amazing flowers..
and a light green rose bush..they havent started flowering yet

We're in the middle of fertilizing and weeding around our roses this week. I gave the roses their first real winter pruning this summer. The previous owners never pruned them, so they were pretty gnarly. I am hoping we'll have flowers in the next week or two. I've seen the start of blossoms on the plants that have already been fertilized, so that's a good sign! Here are a few from last summer:

My mom was a big fan of antique roses, and was a founding member of the Texas Rose Rustlers, who would gather and go out and look for antique roses in old yards and graveyards to propagate and identify to hopefully "bring them back." Those roses sound fantastic! Are they repeat bloomers? My neighbor has a huge beautiful rose shrub that has pale pink large flowers in late spring, but thats it for the year. Is this typical of antique roses? Im only familiar w/ the ones i have that come from the nursery.

Duchesse Du Brabant is a repeat bloomer. It is the rose Teddy Roosevelt wore in his lapel

A good source of antique roses is Antique Rose Emporium. Visit http://www.antiqueroseemporium.com/ and they have photos and charts letting you know if they are repeat bloomers, etc. Antique roses should never be pruned and don't need spraying! They are the rose lovers dream plants. All those roses without the worry and work.
