Rosecomb Thread

Ok, I have a question. I bought these mixed I think rosecomb bantams on a whim the other day because they were mottled. I looked at the Rosecomb Federation site looking for Mottled Rosecombs awhile ago, and it seemed no one had them. So when I saw these for sale I jumped at the chance even though they were mixed possibly. The only reason I say possibly is that a couple of them have feather stubs on their legs. They look like low grade rosecombs to me minus the stubs. Anyway, I wanted to know where I could get some nice quality Rosecomb bantams blue or black so that I can cross them with these mottled ones so I could have my own strain of mottled rosecombs in a couple of generations. I say a couple generations because that is how long it will take to just introduce the mottled gene. I know these are an established variety already but it seems no one really has them.

This is a bad picture of the cock bird

beautiful bird, share more! they look almost just like the crosses of my rosecomb show cock, and my OEGB hens, and they should cross back very well.

I hope so. I'm trying to track down some show stock. I think its a very pretty variety, and an easy project to take on. The rooster looks like he is in molt (I bought these last night like I said on a whim), and I can't wait to see what his tail looks like. The hens look very old english influenced more so than the rooster. BUT they have very small rose combs. I'm not sure whats up with that. I can go out quickly tomorrow and take some pictures of them. The only problem I foresee is the stubs and maybe some red leakage. I wanted to get some feedback. I'm really boring around here and I just mainly breed my Black Ameraucana Bantams.... I dabbled in some other varieties, but mostly just blacks lol, so I'm not good at colors or projects!

Here are the hens I'm working with and they are a bit removed from the standard

Blue Mottled Hen #1

Black Mottled Hen

Blue Mottled Hen #2

AND THIS is the goal

I think I might be better off just using my cock bird over some nice hens....

I agree, I think you would be better off getting some nice hens to work with. The hens with the feathered legs are going to be hard to work with on type.

I am ready to see those guys! I think they will be really good chicks. How are the black babies looking?

So far pretty good,
Sorry I did not make pryor.. I woke up very late 3 hr drive and when I woke I had 30 minutes to make the drive and coop in so decided that house chores and getting breed pens in final set was the course for the day..
How did you do?

Well, your cockerel beat mine. Three hens there, I took first and third, Second and third on cockerels, out of 4, pullets, I think, I got 3 and 4 out of 6.

TK,
I wish I knew what the birds where even crossed with..
Type on the hens is way way off.. In general Type comes from teh hen and color from the male..
With taht out of the way Mottling is a recesive trait.. the male will pass to all all offspring but will not be seen in the first generation. F1 generation
Breeding him to a good black female will introduce the trait, then run an F1 x F1 for your F2 generation select only rose combed birds with decent Rosecomb Type, black with mottling, breed a male from that back to the Black females and you should be well on your way.

Or you can start with a Mottled OE male x Black Rosecomb females and know what you have. I think what you have based on the appearance of the hens they may be spangled crosses

Guess that is not too bad for my first show. I knew that cockerel that I sent you was going to be a good bird. I think that as these other two will turn out and look just like him. Course they came from the same breeder pen. I am going go to Hutch next month, and show everybody again. I have them all in training pens now, and hope they look a little better, and in a lot better condition.

Well sounds like you did pretty good since that cockrell was one of yours.. and for a first show congrats.. what did you think of the BB Red hen?
