Hi all,

I am currently incubating 8 Rouen duck eggs. I had my first pip Sunday night (Day 24) so I put my incubator on lockdown. I have a forced air, humidity throughout incubation averaged out to about 55, temperature 99-100. My humidity is around 75ish right now. Yesterday, I noticed three others have pipped too! I now have 4 out of 8 that have. I have also heard chirping coming from the eggs. One I saw moving around but no pip yet (as far as I can see). I have seen some progression in all four eggs in terms of additional small cracks. Today is day 26. I know it’s early as ducks sometimes take longer than the 28 days. In terms of the eggs that have pipped already, as long as they are showing minor progression, I don’t help them at all? Even if it could get to 4-5 days after their pip? And for the remaining four, what if they pipped at the bottom of the egg, which is why I can’t see? Will they be OK?

If you are seeing additional pip marks no assistance is needed and are likely to continue zipping and hatch soon.

As you're on Day 26, I'd wait and see how things progress over the next few days. Something to watch for is wrong end (pointy end) pippers that signifies a malpositioned duckling. And, once they start zipping, that process usually takes under 30 minutes and up to 1 hour. If they are struggling to unzip after that, they are likely stuck. Ducks do seem to take forever to hatch. But they're so darn cute, they make up for it. :) If you run into anything you're not sure about, keep asking questions.

Thank you! I just worry about the one that pipped Sunday night. I wasn’t sure if there was a maximum amount of time that is allotted since they begin their first pip. I did see that particular egg move some piece of shell today!

I think that’s why I’m not THAT worried, because it is only day 26. I just wasn’t sure how long is too long between an egg pipping to hatch, especially since my first one happened Sunday night. For the remaining 4, I haven’t been able to see any pipping, but I know it’s still relatively early. One I saw rock a bit yesterday. I just stress that maybe the pip is underneath and I can’t see it.

I've had a few pip on the underside of the egg and be fine. :)

Did you mist the eggs? That, in my experience, is also helpful when it comes time for them breaking through the membrane and shell. If not, but the humidity has been good, that can be enough in some environments. If they're pipping and rocking, sounds like all is well so far with time to spare.

I just noticed that one of my eggs did pip on the pointy end. That’s the one that pipped first, and the one that is showing the most progression.

Ok, great. That makes me feel better. I’m currently sitting by the incubator and occasionally do hear some chirping. I don’t see anything yet on the remaining 4. I haven’t misted them, I haven’t opened the incubator since Sunday night. I keep adding water through the little air holes when needed. Humidity ranges from 70-80ish right now. I’m in South Florida and it’s been raining daily, so that is increasing it as well.

Good! Well done.

Just keep an eye on him. When they pip on the pointy end, it's usually through the membrane straight to the outside (instead of an internal pip into the air cell on the fat end and then to the outside) and can sometimes go through blood vessels or be a bit more challenging for them to maneuver. As long as he's progressing though, that is good.
