Royal Palm Breed Standard issues

Wow very interesting!! These 3.5 month olds all have some splash in their tails, not fully white. I got them from Murray McMurray hatchery as day old poults.

Yes I know this is a year old post

I got a batch of "Royal Palms" from McMurrays several years ago. They were shipped from New Mexico. At least 1/3 of them did not qualify as Royal palms because of the brown on some of their feathers. One of them after her molt going into her second winter did develop the banded tail coverts.

Palms should be homozygous for black winged bronze with gray and narrangansett genes Most palms are probably not pure due to the many variations that have been made such as red palm, pencilled palm, chocolate palm, etc.... I would think you would need to start with some good quality black winged bronze and narrangansett birds and work from there.

Blessings,

Bo

Very interesting thread. I had no idea what other specifics were needed to meet breed standards, just that brown was a no-no.

My Toms are 4 months old, so very young still. So far I’m not seeing any brown, but I’m not seeing them meet the standard from your description either.
Here’s my boys, they are from crackle hatchery.

I would love some feedback on our turkeys. They are all 8 months old and were sold from two local breeders as royal palm. My white one obviously is, but not breed standard. But what is the dark one?
My jennys are all white with no markings yet. Will they maybe develop black bands later? Thoughts?

You can try submitting your photo to Turkey Color Genetics for identification.

Royal Palms develop their color very early. If those are 8 months old, they are not Royal Palms, they are White turkeys being homozygous for the recessive white gene. (cc).
