I caught a pigeon I noticed had a rubber band wrapped around its leg. I cut off the rubber band, but I brought the pigeon home since its toes were turning black/purple.

Day 1: just removed the rubber band, minimal limping

Day 2: pigeon is limping more, toes are less purple but the foot and toes are swollen

Day 5: pigeon is limping less but the foot is turning purple

Day 6: pigeon is limping a lot less, using the foot, but it’s still purple and swollen

Is the whole foot going to need to be amputated? Do just the toes need to be amputated? Or should I leave the foot alone entirely?
Is the foot infected? Anything else I should do?

Rubber band finally lost her foot!

The stump wasn’t as bloody as I expected, and it stopped bleeding relatively quickly. I brought her inside for now. She doesn’t seem to miss the foot that much.

Since she’s missing a foot and part of a leg, I am not going to release her. It would be different if it was only her toes, but the fact is that she won’t be able to walk normally again. Thankfully, pigeons are very adaptable and she’s been doing well in my aviary. Maybe she’ll even let me pet her some day. :love

Please do not amputate at home. You need a sterile environment, sedation, pain meds and antibiotics to do it humanely. Please bring this bird to an avian
I’m no medical expert but it does indeed look dead. If amputation is the clean and kind way to get rid of it…yes.
Should the foot be amputated?

The foot should fall off on its own. Amputations are ugly but i don't really see what y'all mean. This foot has all the right markers for an easy break away.

@RoostersAreAwesome how's RB doing? Is the foot still intact? I've been thinking about you both :frow

The last thing I need is more birds, so I come to admire these beauties too often ☺️ They're so gorgeous
Surprisingly, her foot’s still attached. Here’s some pictures:

Rubber band is doing well and acting like a normal pigeon other than her limp. She’s very hard to catch.

How's RB doing?
Good! She still hasn’t lost her foot, though.
Maybe I'm misunderstanding, but in the photo the other foot is red. If you do a simple search for "pigeon with red feet", you will see that pigeons have red feet.

Edited because I realize this post is a bit old and have seen the updates.
I know pigeon feet are red, I was wondering why the foot seemed to recover before going downhill again.
