Rubbish Coop and pen

Nice looking coop. Way to recycle stuff. I would figure one nest box for 3 chickens, some say 4 chickens per nest box. So, I would say 5 nest boxes for 15 chickens. They will use the same nest boxes so you have plenty.

The coop is 6 1/2' wide, 5' deep, 7' high at the front and 6' high at the back; in addition the nesting box is about 6' wide, 15" deep and 15" high and about 5" above the coop floor. The floor is 2ft off the ground and I plan to have a feeder and drinker under there, maybe even box it in somewhat to make it more comfortable in bad weather.

My DH is building me a coop very much like this one. Except he put the nesting boxes on the side opposite where you have your door. We thought there may be too much water run off over the boxes if we put them on the 'short'
end (maybe just too much over kill though. lol)

Anyway, I have to ask, are you going to use the triangles on the sides, created by how the roof is made, as your ventilation or are you planning on closing them in? I ask because that is what we are planning to do (vents). I need to figure how to lay out my roosts so that the birds won't be in a draft in the winter. Should I do them // with the vents or perpendicular to the vents? And lower than the vents? Also, our nesting boxes are also inset like the ones you made so could we put roosts above the boxes? I know they won't be able to poop in the boxes from the roost, but I didn't know if it would be a problem for the birds when they are laying, like will they still lay in the boxes?

Thanks! Great coop, BTW!

clarkestep - I'm really a beginner at this (both at chicken keeping and building stuff!) so not the best person to answer your questions; however I'm pretty confident in what I'm doing and it's all going to plan so far! I plan to run the roosts from the back to the front setting them at the height of the top of the nesting boxes. With the venting I'm basically making my life easy by leaving the gap that I'm left with on each side for vents; I am planning to make some simple shutters to close some of the vents off in the winter but as I'm in the south of the UK the weather is rarely too hot or cold. Here's how the side ended up:

The nesting boxes should be fine on the back as the roof overhangs by 10" and I intend to add a gutter and downpipe plus I'll cover the box lid with something waterproof. Even without that the rain mostly runs off.
