RUBY WENT TO THE VET TODAY

I'm jealous-I've never owned a chicken worth taking to a Vet let alone spending $249 on at the Vet's!

What did they say was wrong? Most Chicken doc's say to give them Tylan 1 a day for 3 days if injectable and if it's the powder in the water give it for 5-7.

She's not sure exactly what's going on. She did do a fecal and it came back negative. I'm beginning to think maybe she has pnemonia.

The pooping episode was indeed priceless, just like the pooper herself!!Your story reminded me of when I took my cat Teddy to the vet for treatment of a bad abscess. The vet went to open it up and - oh it's so gross to even relive through typing! - the gunk in there shot like a rocket straight into the vet's EYE!!!

I love my Ruby chicken, as I fondly refer to her. She is one of my first chickens. I don't know how old she is b/c I got her from an old farmer that had what looked like 100 other chickens. He said she was about 1yr. but I don't think he really had a clue b/c of all the other chickens. I've had her since Oct. '07. She was one of four I got. Two others have since passed. I really hope I can get her well.

So does she have pneumonia? How much Tylan are you injecting every 6-8 hrs?

I work for a vet, the poop thing is a hoot.

I love it. It's never a good day in a vets office unless you are pooped or peed on. We don't see chickens at our clinic or I'd try to advise on tylan. Hope she gets better.

actually...the effectiveness of the Tylan in the system is about 8 hours..
I have a friend who is pretty expert on poultry/animal meds..and she advises 3 shots a day for 5-7 days.
Others advise 1 shot a day for 3 days.
Still others..if using Tylan 200 advise 1 shot..and another in 48 hours.
the guy at featherfanciers suggests once a day for 5-7 days..
My friend warns of a re-occurance of the illness, and resistance build up if dose is too low or schedule is too short. She gets her info from Avian/Poultry vet.
