*~*Runner Duck Club*~*

Hello! I just wanted to show my flying fawn and white runner duck! He is five months old and can fly very well! In the video he is flying with a Buff Orpington. They can both fly much farther than this, but in the video they fly about 250 feet. They are both drakes.

Wooooow! So graceful!!! Mine try to fly and it's just a flappy, running, crazy spectacle

Wow! Beautiful. I have tried to get my runners to fly. I toss them gently into the air. Most flap like crazy and fall like a rock (I don't throw very high and I always catch). Then I have one that doesn't bother to flap and just waits for me to catch. I guess it's good my runners don't fly, but I'd love to see a bit of air from time to time.

Thanks! Throwing them up works good to build up muscle, but the only way they will fly is if they jump off something far away from the flock, or sometimes you can throw them with a lot of forward thrust if they are a couple hundred feet from the flock and they will fly back. Once they are able to fly jumping off something, it isn't long until they take off. I would love to try and train a pekin to fly, I don't know if it is possible, but it would be fun to see.

What happens if they don't fly though and land on their legs they could be seriously injured.

Good idea about throwing them into the air while they are away from the flock! I'm going to take one far away from the flock to the other side of the pond... So if they don't fly and fall down they will land in the water and won't hurt their legs. Of course they may choose to land in the water just for fun, but it's worth a try!
