*~*Runner Duck Club*~*

Thought I would toss this posting out to see if anyone had any feedback for me as to whether or not I am on the right track. I am trying to improve my Chocolate Runners. I have excellent black ducks that I am going to breed with an excellent chocolate drake. I believe that chocolate is sex link so then all the chocolate ducklings will be female and all the black ducklings will be males. Then take those new chocolate hens and continue to breed to my nice chocolate drakes. Does it sound like I am on the right track?

Wish I were good at genetics. The plan sounds fine to me. At what point - if there is any - do you have a line that will breed true? Or does that happen fairly quickly? Or is it beside the point? I know you wanted some feedback, and here I am just asking beginner questions.

I started with six chocolate runners and five black runners. I think they are beautiful. All girls, though. And not exactly statuesque show quality. But beautiful. All of them have at least some snow, now. Zwei, a chocolate, has the most, looks like she's wearing a white pinafore and with white sprinkles on her head and neck. Vier has a checkerboard look on her chest and tummy.

Sieben, a black, is wearing an almost solid white hood these days.

Thanks Amiga for the reply. I am thinking that once I get good chocolate females to mate to my chocolate drakes that they would be split to black but shouldn't throw that color unless I breed to another color other than chocloate. I believe chocolate is recessive but sex linked so the chocolate male should throw chocolate female ducklings and the chocolate female should throw chocolate males. I really should have paid more attention during science class

It doesn't often snow here in sunny Southern California, but when it does the ducks have a field day :). This is Seven, Clarence, Rowena, Silver Belle, and Qwib-qwib. Seven and Qwib-qwib are half Trout runner and half Saxony (their father was a very brave drake). The woman I got Clarence, Rowena, and Silver Belle from said she ordered Welsh Harlequins and got runners, so I suspect these are half Trout and half Welsh Harlequin. I love the Trouties, I just wish I could find a good source for them so I could get more

Because there is no such thing as having too many ducks

I agree. Been looking for a nice start of Trout Runners myself.
The only place I have been able to find is a place just North of San Antonio, Texas. And they don't ship anything, not a hatching egg, not an adult bird. I have fantasies about winning the lottery and traveling to Texas - although it might be cheaper to import a breeding flock from England at that point

. Nobody ever accused me of having any sense when it comes to ducks

Maybe I just need to make some friends in San Antonio and have them ship the Trouties to me. I can't quite mortgage off the first-born to pay for it, but I'm sure I'd be able to scrape together some kind of funding.

I am in Oklahoma so Texas is just one state down but would still be an 18 hour roundtrip drive. But, wouldn't have been the craziest waterfowl related journey that I've made. Does that place in San Antonio have a website?

Sent you a PM with a link to a place in Indiana that appears to have them and will ship.

I got so excited when I found some Trout Runners for sale. Unfortunately I think I need to refine my search a bit more. LOL

LOL, I usually get the more exotic Table Runner.

On the bright side, my wonderful spouse has just said that if the Texans won't ship Trouties to California, then I should just go to Texas and get myself a dozen ducks. I still might have to sell a kidney to raise gas money but at least the marriage is intact
