Russian Orloffs

Pics
I ordered from Natures Hatchery because they had Russian Orloffs and I didn't have to order 25! I was told I had one Russian Orloff, 1 Wellie and 1 Sussex. I am a bit disappointed at the moment.

Definitely not Wellies. Already ruled that one out with the Wellie crowd.

I have 3 speckled sussex. I'm pretty sure but I didn't even think of leghorns. All three have the same single comb. One is a bit darker than the other two. Wings are coming in a bit different on that one (looks like bottom feathers? are coming in first), but the same colors. That darker one isn't getting tail feathers yet but the other two are. Maybe that means I either have 2 roos and one pullet or vice versa??? Possibly? I don't know. Or like you said, maybe 2 leghorns and one sussex.

But, no orloffs. /cry.

You ordered your bigger ones from spotsplus?

Ahhh! Well- Ideal lets you order less than 25- you just might get stuck with a bunch of packing peanut roos though. And I think they may not be heat-tolerant babies (their line anyway). I had been watching Welp's site as well.

I got 3 - I think 2 roos and a pullet- from spotsplus, and a bantam orloff x ameraucana that is the PRETTIEST little roo I've ever seen. If there was such a thing as lemon-blue-wheaten- he is it! I don't know if she has any more to sell, but I'm waiting to maybe get some from shelleyd to get a variety of bloodlines.

Sussex aren't so bad to have around- definately yard candy! Leghorns will have yellow legs. Sussex will have pink that turn to white. They are more "round" as chicks too. I've noticed that the sussex will have little wite wingtips coming in sometimes, and leghorns won't.

Well, I talked to the Hatchery. They are always so nice and willing to help.

They swear up and down that I have Russian Orloffs. The ones with the suspicious combs. They said the comb is shorter down the face than the Speckled Sussex and it just won't grow as tall as the others and that some rose combs (correction - walnut combs - Thanks Shelby) look like the straight combs at this age, just shorter down the face. So if this is true, I have 2 Russian Orloffs. One of my DOA was a Russian Orloff as well

I am going to continue to hope, but, I'm still kinda skeptical.

Thanks all! We will see.

. Thanks for correcting me!

sigh... there is no way that my birds' straight looking comb is going to ever look like that walnut comb when they grow up. UGH. I really think the hatchery is wrong.

Is anyone other than the big hatcheries willing to ship chicks or older birds to AK? My incubator is done for the season since it didn't turn out ANYTHING in my test batch, but I want more birds to start so I can work with them next spring.

If worse comes to worse, it seems from past threads that Ideal is the best hatchery to purchase from?
