Russian Orloffs

Wow, I just caught up on the thread. For some reason or other I have not been getting my updates to this forum. I am definitely helping out in any way to get the Orloff recognized. I have 11 Orloff (LF Spangled that are about 3 weeks or so) not sure of their sex yet or standard quality. Also interested in Mahogany. If any are good standard I am willing to have some available for bringing the breed back strong. Let me know what I can do to help out. The Orloff Society has a published standard for the breed on their facebook, not sure if anyone is aware of it. https://www.facebook.com/groups/orloffsociety/476458955714222/ & https://www.facebook.com/groups/orloffsociety/476457912380993/. I spoke to Erhard Weihs back in April & he was looking into getting the APA to re-admitt the breed, I can touch basis with him again.

I plan on getting Mahogany from Erhard. I'll see what I end up with after the eggs hatch(should arrive in a few days, he is mailing Monday). I can't say how many I will have, or when. But once I cull adult birds I would like to find others willing to help out with breeding. I want others to take birds to create a few separate lines. Vermont isn't exactly close to Kentucky, but its closer than Washington State. Maybe keep in contact and meet at a show on the East Coast sometime.

Seeing as I am looking for others to help with breeding I would preferably like to have them close to home. Possibly meet to discuss what we plan to cull for to insure our birds are all heading the same direction.

I just hatched 10 out of 12 ro chicks and bought an additional 4 chicks from the same person. Since they are all from same parent stock I am looking for diversity for breeding some myself. I am not looking for top standard since I don't show any of my chickens, just good quality. Anyone near appalachian mtn region?

My last and nicest colored male from my original Orloff group succumbed to the heat yesterday. It was so sad to find him dead this morning. I know it was the heat that did him in. I think it got up to 108 here yesterday. He was the one that wasn't breeding the hens very well this year. I only have 14 of his offspring growing up. I hope some turn out nice and big like him. He weighed 7 lbs and had such a nice disposition.

Thank you all. It is brutal here right now. They are predicting 109 to 111 degrees all week. That is hot, even for us. I always peg 108 as critical temp. for chickens. I hope I don't lose any more birds. I lost an Ameraucana/Orloff cross earlier in the week. She was 1/2 Orloff. I caught her sister just in time, having heat stroke. Dunked her in a bucket of water, she recovered. If I hadn't gone out when I did, I would have had 2 dead hens instead of one. The Orloffs definitely have a harder time in this heat.
