Russian Orloffs

Beautiful babies gander007! And to think I sold 'extra' RO chicks for $3 each when people came to buy production layers and asked what kind those beauties were:-( Now that I know what I really have I plan to price them around $5 per chick and see how that goes. Hard work getting folks off 'the usual' chickens!

I kept my RIR's for a year and a half, sold them this past summer since I was getting a lot of other breeds in. I really should have kept them! They laid almost every day even in winter snows. Yep, dummy me sold stock that was already laying and am still waiting for eggs since the RO juveniles are my oldest chickens now. I did get buff orpingtons and white leghorns along with all of the fancy breeds so when everyone starts to lay I believe I will be overrun with eggs....eating eggs, hatching eggs, selling eggs...:)

Ya I know that deal I sold my stock of RO's and put 42 egg's in the incubator that I had saved before I let them go and 37 hatched and I culled 11 roo's and 2 more got stepped on by siblings in the first three days so I have 24 left

We all have decisions we have to make from time to time

I have to ask for 10 dollars as I try not to sell them till thy are 6 to 8 weeks old !!!!!!!!
Here in the Southern California Desert this breed thrives very well all year long
and you are correct about people not wanting to change from the normal chickens
they are use to but the EE was the same way about 10 years ago hard to get rid of
now I really do not have a problem getting rid of them for 5 to 7 dollars at 2 weeks
of age and 10 dollars each at 8 weeks of age

That is what I hope to change in my area. I just happened to have some RO chicks in the outdoor brooder with the RIR chicks when a buyer came so the RO's ended up being an impulse buy because they were unique. I told dh that I'm going to set up coops so that buyers have to pass 'rare and fancy' breeds to get to the layers! And of course us chicken people always LOVE to talk chicken and get others started on something different:)

Just went to check on the girls & realized Eli had layed her First egg

earlier today. I had her in a separate pen with a few younger pullets I hatch a few months ago so I know it was her egg.
Congrrats VT! Check this out [Jan 18 and 19] http://www.poultrycongress.com/ It'd be great to shake hands with you while there. You can also use that date as a convenient reason to bring me Eli :) I can put her right in with my Mottled plan ;)

gander007, It's sad but true. Hopefully you kept a few good old stock around. I'm new to raising chicks and so far have managed to loose over half of the young ones I've tried raising on a couple of occasions. When I had game fowl I let a broody layer hen care for them. She hatched me 16 of 18 eggs I put under her. I lived in a more tropical area as well. I've done a lot of reading over the last couple of days so I'm hoping I get beter at raising young ones.

Cknldy, I first came across Orloff looking up my neighbor's breed for her. It was love at first sight from the picture. I searched online for about 3 or 4 months before I found someone willing to ship day old chicks since I didn't have an incubator at the time. I was willing to pay any price for them & still would if I really wanted a specific Orloff being sold (not that I can afford it) since I know it is a breed well worth it.

Thanks Ash, I'm not counting on being at the NE Poultry Congress due to travel restraints, but it would be nice to meet you at some point. Are there any airports nearby you, maybe I can take a trip down during one of our trainings as we fly to Maine every now & then. How is your mottled plan coming along? I don't any anything currently to breed with Eli as my roos consist of 1 white &1 red leghorn and a RIR. I was going to buy 2 Spangled Orloff last month but had no way of driving to NH to pick them up. My backup plan fell through. By the way, got another egg from Eli today, she laid it on the floor. As soon as I walk into the coop she starts following me around and stands on my feet. Over the summer I had her following me all over the yard like a puppy.

Yes I had to let everything go but I made an agreement with the buyer did offer me the chance to buy back one of the roosters and a hen or two once the summer started and they got some fertile eggs to hatch but one never knows the future

Sound's like you had a lot of good fertile egg's for your hen to hatch
