Russian Orloffs

Beautiful poultry! Great job getting them to all go out together nicely.

Really all were feed before I could get them together for the photo op and it was late in the evening just before sunset or there would have been some big problems but thank you for noticing how nice it looks to get them all together at one time

14 Russian Orloff eggs went in the bator on Friday. I was going to wait to set them on Saturday for a Valentine's Day hatch date but one day sooner is close enough. How are your chicks doing gander? Have you got them sold already? It may still be too cold here for the chicks to sell after hatching in February but I'm excited to start this year off. I'm going to get a good pic of the light (I call it pastel) colored 14 week old Russians to post and see what opinions are on if they are still spangled russians or if they're called a different color.

Cknldy good luck with your hatch. Keep us posted on how it's going. I have 14 from 2 dozen I put in looking viable so far. Due to hatch Feb 1st. Had four under a broody hen but she pushed one out in the middle of the night. Hatched two of my dozen mixed ones yesterday (the ones I swapped out from the broody hen).

Got a breeding pen set up with my new cockerel, best hatched from last year. I have not seen him breed any of the hens, though.
I pulled a bunch of eggs from different breeding pens, including the Orloffs, today. Will pull some tomorrow too, and put them all in the incubator and see how the fertility is coming along. I am not seeing a lot of activity from any of my cockerels, and they are all in pens with lights on timers, so they are getting extended daylength. Maybe they are all doing their duty on the sly.

I had this issue too but it turns out they were just shy or sly. I don't know if *I* am as cold hardy as an of my birds honestly. This winter sure has been a toughie.

Wishing everyone luck and fertility from the start up! It sounds like things are off to a good start if everyone can get the eggs before they freeze. I sold the non bearded/no muff pullet and a cockerel yesterday so I don't have to try to keep her eggs separate anymore. Now I have an order for a dozen hatching eggs and only two girls laying so we'll see how that goes. Where's the warm weather for my sanity?!?!

Taking a much needed break huh? :) Are those your girls that have already gone through a molt? They have really good spangling.

No they have not gone through a molt yet as they have only just started laying ...
It was time to start a new line as the older ones were getting down to about an
egg a week so it was time to start over ........

But yes thank you on their beauty I really like their spangling very much
