Russian Orloffs

I have a lot of different breeds, and find the Orloffs to have the best personality. Very curious, always wanting to know what you are doing, watching you, underfoot instead of running away. Very friendly birds. That is why I keep them even though they are not the best for a hot climate like where I live. Plus they are beautiful.

Ditto here! My rooster is very sweet to the ladies also! His crow is not as obnoxious as my polish roo & not near as often! My hen is in top of pecking order & enjoys being held by the kids.

Our chicken adventures started with Rhode Island Reds and almost tainted the kids' view of roosters forever. Just one turned mean but that was enough to keep the kids away. The Russian Orloff cockerels brought them back around! They are the friendliest cockerels ever so the kids can scoop them up without a second thought. The RO's really gave the kids confidence. I'd suggest them to anyone. On another note- one of the cockerels we named Sickbay because he had been "played" with by a dog when he was about 8 weeks old and escaped a cage. He recovered brilliantly and is the biggest 9 month old. Thing is he has never been seen mounting the pullets. The other 2 do but Sickbay doesn't. Of the 9 month olds I have 3 males and 3 females in a coop, no fighting even with hormones running rampant right now. Weird....

I joined the FB page for RO's and got great feedback on my Rooster (thanks Gallo). I'm very eggcited to start my breeding program! Now if my hen would start laying, we might be in business!!

Thanks! Those are nice eggs. I am now wondering if I should get Orloffs because I heard they are not very good layers. Hmmm........

They may not be production 'egg a day' layers but I have 2 girls that started laying on the third. I've gotten 7 eggs in 7 days from just the two. Keeping a calendar for egg counts and the third pullet's face turned red today so 3 laying will be a pretty good egg count.

Mine started laying right about 20wks and lay about 4-5 a week. They took about a month off to molt and are back to work. So not an egg a day but not bad either. Granted they are in their first year so don't know if they will maintain or drop off as time goes by.

That is a dandy one! Congrats. So yesterday the pullet with no muff/beard that I put up for sale acted like she wanted to set eggs already. I let her keep the egg until we went down in the afternoon and it was pooped on. No need to set poopy eggs right? So I took it. This morning she was back in the box all poofed up. An egg was in the adjoining box so I reached to get it. Bugger warning nipped at me! Okay, she's serious after only a week of laying so I gave her the other egg with my jacket pulled over my hand She tucked it under and gave me a look like she was daring me to touch her eggs again! The third pullet that just turned red-faced jumped up into the adjoining box to investigate so it looks like more eggs will get stolen, lol.
