That's the German club site. My copy of the German standard came from that site. A lot of knowledgeable people there, and a few that speak pretty decent english, too.
I feel that the German birds represent the more correct type. Germany is the country that really developed and finalized the Orloff as we know it.

I would rather not do this, as I intend to essentially spiral breed with 3+ lines out of my hatch(if possible). But if worse comes to worst and other breeds have to be introduced for lack of strong genetics what would be an ideal choice? If any?

Would it be possible to get in birds from the UK/Canada/Germany to help keep lines more pure or are the requirements too difficult to overcome?


edit- I'm crossing my fingers Erhard has had an easy time managing his flock to prevent inbreeding as much as possible given he has pretty much the only strong flock of red, and that is where I'm acquiring my eggs.

yep, that was me. I have given my opinion on crosses earlier in the thread. I think desertmarcy may have some experience at an Ameraucana cross if I remember correctly
As far as imports, Canada would be easiest for obvious reasons. Germany and UK can be done, but it is expensive and logistically difficult. I have been in contact with a couple of different breeders in the both areas and really hope to get some eggs or birds imported in the future. All the regulations for import can be found on the http://www.aphis.usda.gov/ website.

I cannot imagine why outcrossing to another breed would ever be necessary. What a can of worms that would be! For countless generations. If anyone does this, please let me know so I can track the line and be sure to never EVER purchase stock from anyone that's bred in.

Granted, there may already be who knows what mixed in with the existing Orloffs that are out there, but there's enough stock around that this should not be even considered.

Can you imagine the mess an Ameraucana cross would be? Never mind the off leg, skin and egg colors, but the TYPE would be WRECKED. COMPLETELY wrong type. You'd be better off breeding back to a big game fowl of some type, but then you lose everything else. Nonononono.

Well it would be a worse comes to worst situation, especially with breeding Red(in my case). I'm just worried that several generations down the line there may still be few breeders left in the US with minimal chance at contact. And while I would like to think Spangled would be a good option for type and to an extent color, the amount of inbreeding in Spangled lines could lead to more problems.

Ideally I would keep 3-5 lines for spiral breedings, but out of 24 hatching eggs that will likely prove difficult.

It would literally only take two flocks operating MOSTLY independently of one another for you to have all the genetic material you would need to continue on indefinitely.

I have not, but if I was going to order I would go to them, if I couldn't hook up directly with someone that was clearly breeding small time with a standard seriously in mind. They've had their birds for a number of years now, since I first joined BYC at least and I gather a while before then. They aren't fly-by-night and I can't imagine these birds are hugely profitable for them so they must be keeping them out of sincere interest.

I previously ordered from Welp when they still shipped here. If I had been set up for a breeding flock, I could have worked with those birds. But since you are in Alaska, too, that won't help you much as they no longer ship anything but their meat birds here. (The "fancy breeds" they drop ship from Privett.)
