Russian Orloffs

gander007, I stand corrected. As NYREDS says, there is a SOP for breeds recognized by the APA. The Large Fowl Russian Orloff is not a recognized breed so therefore there is no breed specific description for it (what we call an SOP), yet. There is a bantam Orloff breed description which is what most large fowl Orloff breeders I have spoken to use to go by. Thanks for the clarification NYREDS.

Cknldy, most with Large Fowl Russian Orloff go by the ABA Orloff Standard of Perfection (SOP). Also If you want to get an idea of similar Spangled SOP as well as the ABA SOP, you can read them on the Orloff Club of North America open forum thread http://www.usorloffs.freeforums.net/board/12/current-standards

There you will find the Russian, German, & UK SOP as well as the ABA. Also you can view some of the stock from members on here that have Spangled Orloff as well, that have been breeding them for years.

gander007 there is not a current SOP for Large Fowl Orloff here in the USA. We are working on adopting an SOP to gain APA acceptance. We have the above mentioned thread & the closed facebook group I posted a few posts back on here https://www.facebook.com/#!/groups/uscaorloffs/

It would be great to receive input/opinions from anyone breeding/keeping Orloff to agree on an SOP that we can all breed to. This includes Canada members as well as they go by the APA.

and I knew if I asked that someone out there would respond with the correct information as you have on
this subject ......
I have been trying to breed to what I like to see in my yard for several years and just purchased 4 more
from a new blood line to see how things go and I am sure that anyone can attest to it is difficult to
acquire even fair let alone good stock and if I can find some good stock and have the moneys on hand
will pay a good price for most of my breeding stock as right now I am looking for a good rooster Russian
Orloff as my last good one past masterly after only 3 1/2 years of age put I do believe this will have to be
a very well planed buy

Yes, there is an SOP [Standard Of Perfection]. However, it does not include a breed description of the Russian Orloff.

Alright is there an SOP then or not on the Large Spangled Russian Orloff IE look's and body
construction/build and feathering ????????

IMO each person will try to breed to what in their opinion is what an Orloff should represent be it by the ABA Standard or any other Standard available on the breed in Europe. That's why I can't express enough how important it is for anyone interested in this breed to come together and collaborate on adopting a solid Standard to go by across the board and present for acceptance into the APA. Although not everyone may be interested in showing, it is only fair not to leave out anyone as all opinions count into adopting said Standard. That is why the Orloff groups/club has been started.

As for finding a good rooster be it from fair or good stock, there are various breeders who have IMO quality (non-hatchery) birds, desertmarcy & rare feathers farm to name a few of the top of my head. Yes I thank I will be needing to join the a Russian Orloff group ....
I just purchased 4 Russian Orloff hens from desertmarcy and I do have to
admit she has some good stock and if I was married the purchase would
have been difficult at best but I am so happy with how docile and the egg
production is about 5 egg's per week for the 2 out of the 4 that are laying
so yes all-round desertmarcy is putting out one good product but when I
got the hens she was out of Rooster's that just goes' to show ya how good
her line is as Marcy cant even keep them in stock !!!!!!!!!

There are a lot of Game birds that aren't APA recognized and plenty of folks hoping to change that. I am in support of anyone wanting to get more game birds in the shows.

Re: too much white etc. let your birds get through two molts to see what happens because I have seen how some grow up young with a lot of white and then it molts out.

Here ya go VT- it isn't much but there are white spangles throughout. That was my first question when I found this thread, whether they were mahogany or spangled. I'm happy with how they've turned out so far and they got me hooked on Russians!

Cknldy I do see some of the white spangles on his back. I would like to see a picture of his breast & wings. He does look like a nice looking cock. Legs look nice yellow color, comb looks good, beak nice & short. Nice brow ridge giving the predator look. From what I can tell the tail looks a good angle. I've seen Spangled Orloff cocks with little to a lot of white spangling on the back. wrong color I was referring to was the breast but it's hard to tell from the pic. IMO ideal would be black breast with white spangling for the Spangled Orloff.

Well thank you! Honest critique is always better than 'let's say it looks great so as not to hurt feelings' critique in my book I don't think there is much spangling on the guys' breast. As for the preferable black breast for spangled russians- well, I guess the newbie stock would be out because non of those are dark colored at all. I tend to think they are more beautiful than my dark ones but then I like bright colors anyhow;-)

Remember, spangling should increase as time passes so a lot in the beginning might not be good long term.
