Russian Orloffs

I write this as dh is getting more exasperated and commenting more on the peeping....4 chicks hatched yesterday evening and another just got added to the brooder with one pipped and one zipping in the bator! Second set is a bittersweet success due to 10 that went into lockdown and (if the pipped and zipping ones have no problems) 7 chicks hatched. 2 of the eggs showed no signs of life after going into lockdown and one I think quit on day 19. It had been moving before but then nothing at all. How's it going for yall? Collecting, candling, hatching? Lots of things going on with signs of Spring!

Sounds like you are going to have a great Spring ....

Great job on the hatching

Well, 7 new Russians! One egg was left and when I candled it was all dark, no air cell. The chick was huge and filled the entire shell. Membrane completely intact. I believe I know which cockerel was the father and will do one-on-one mating later to in the year to determine if this is something that will happen often with him. Big healthy chicks are great; Big chicks that can't hatch is not. Here's hoping for good news from other Russian Orloff hatches! (Sorry to hijack RO thread to hatching thread there!)

Alright Cknldy, sounds like you are getting a big one on your hands so are you going to
let it hatch naturally or are you going to need to help the chick out of the shell ,,,,

Does anyone know where I can find some good quality Orloff chicks? I've looked everywhere! I'm so desperate!

x2 it is indeed hard, just keep looking that is all we can do. What I have so far is the eggs from Oklahoma on the way here. Crossing my paws!
If we both find something perhaps we can trade eggs from the next gen?

I see some eggs for auction but the pics of the birds have white skin legs not orange or yellow. How hard is that to correct through breeding or is it possible?? (I'm new)

I'd be happy to work something out 2nd generation! The problem now is finding my chickens. :barnie I found out that Stromberg's and Welp both have Orloffs, but I'm a bit scared of buying them from a hatchery. I've heard lots of bad stories about that.
It's nice to know somebody is in the same dilemma as me :). I'll contact you sometime if this "Orloff adventure" works out for me.

I have chicks I can ship. I just hatched a batch, some are still hatching, plus I have 6 that hatched out a week ago. There are enough to safely ship and I will have more the next few weeks. They are hatching really well and fertility has been excellent. PM me if interested.
