Russian Orloffs

i did buy them at TSC from the manager. this is what she told me they were then when i went back because i questioned it, the woman that takes care of them said they never had orloffs.

I don't know if yours are Orloffs or not, I'm new to the breed myself, have my first eggs in the incubator right now. But I wouldn't always trust what the people at the store say, I wanted to pick up some Silver Laced Wyandottes about a week ago and the lady kept trying to tell me that the black chicks with a head spot were SLW. I kept showing her the two actual SLW they had and she was still really pushing that the other chicks were also, because that's how the box was labeled that they arrived in. They were also supposed to have Barred Rocks, but she wasn't sure which ones those were (they are black with head spots as chicks). Never was able to convince her the chicks she was pushing as SLW were Rocks, and I heard her telling someone as I was leaving that they had SLW and pointing them out in the cage. Since I bought the only 2 SLW they had, I'm sure she was showing them the Rocks.

Hi gander, Glad you got your flock refreshed! All my chickens are half grown or babies right now. I'm growing them

I hatched last weekend from some shipped eggs on auction.

I got ahold of a few more eggs to incubate and will have a little variety granted I can hatch them.

Really enjoying these chicks.

Well JWEBB it is nice getting to know you and I hope your hatch goes really well and sounds like you have put yourself together a sound flock

I'm trying hard to do just that! two unrelated sets of eggs to hatch and I think I am done except for the growing for the year. Thats the fun part to see how they turn out

These are the best babies. They greet me in a bum rush even if they already have food. Almost warm enough here for them to get outside some. Have to go get some net to put over the outdoor yard we have some pretty large predatory birds here. Turkey vultures with over 6ft wingspan come around when the farmer does the fields or the dairy cows stir stuff up. . . Well I see you are in the desert there so you know all about predators. I grew up in Cali and certainly miss the desert.
I'm looking forward to sharing some nice chicks and a few eggs with people when I have some.

20 chicks in the brooder, and more eggs in the incubator. Shooting for somewhere between 50-70 chicks this season, I have 2 cocks and 4 hens (one cock will only be paired with 3 of the hens). So that will give me ~25 from each cockerel/~10 from each pairing. This season is just about seeing what each pair throws, next season I will repeat the best breedings, if I haven't scared myself off! :) I got started a little later than hoped due to weather and travel, but should have my numbers by end of April.

How do yall work it so that the ladies don't get over-bred and stay healthy feathered? (Not sure I said that right.) Even with 5 pullets to 1 roo within a couple of months some showed signs of overmating. So what kind of 'off time' schedule do you do for the ladies to keep them healthy and beautifully feathered if breeding all throughout Spring and Summer?

Gander, they look like your bottom picture but i am not sure about wattles. i have seen the smallest of a comb on a couple. they are a bit younger, week or so. i did buy them at TSC from the manager. this is what she told me they were then when i went back because i questioned it, the woman that takes care of them said they never had orloffs. i do remember reading the were the specialty bird, making a come back . i will wait a week and take some more pics. out of the brooder. thank you
Orloffs should have a walnut comb, which on the chicks just looks like a flat spot. If their combs have any points at all, they are not Orloffs. I can't tell from your photos since it is not close up enough for my eyes. Also, the Orloffs should have muffs and beards and I don't see that on your chicks.

they dont have muffs and beards. i didnt look at the comb close but i guess theres no reason to now. i do have some in there with muffs but they are ee. thank you for finding out for me. gotta love those tsc employees
