Russian Orloffs

At what age can you tell the pullets and roos apart with orloffs? I have only one and of course it's the friendliest chicken of the bunch it could care less if you have treats or not and likes to just sit and hang out with you either on your arm, lap or whatever, barely fusses when you pick him/her up... so how early can you tell and how?

12 weeks it is not had to tell the difference ....

I can typically tell around 1-4 weeks. There are several things I have learned to look for:
1 the screamy ones are often cockerels
2 spur buds on the shanks are often quite pronounced with cockerels
3 tail feathers come in long and pointy vs shorter and blunt or rounded [long and point is a male of course]

This is NOT 100% but pretty fair, about 80% in conservative measure. I have honestly only had two ever be females when they were thought to be males. If you have such odds and turn outs then you aren't doing badly, eh?

My fiance and I are buying a house on five acres and we can't wait to have some russian orloffs! We're in Minnesota and would like to get some the first week of August, does anyone have any suggestions on where we should get some chicks? I saw that some people hatch russian orloff eggs too, but it would be much easier for us to get chicks since we don't have experience with hatching.. Any suggestions on where to get them would be great. I was originally going to get them from Sandhill, but I wasn't reading good things about them. I was also considering getting them from Ideal Poultry.

I would love to send you chicks, but I only hatch late fall to early spring.

Hi,

If you search on craigslist under incubators there is someone near plymoth that is willing to incubate any eggs for you. Let me know if you do I might be interested in some.

Goshana! We've decided we are going to purchase a 20 egg incubator and hatch our own eggs mid june or first week of august =) The plan is to order russian orloff eggs and salmon faverolles.

Where are you getting them from? I'm looking for some Bantam Russian Orloffs. Maybe we can order them together?

Gander-Steven's beak is almost completely grown back! There is only about a millimeter or less difference between the top and bottom now. The ladies are laying like crazy too- 5 eggs from 6 ladies a couple of times now even with a dreaded coon checking them out lately. Hope everyone is doing great!
