Russian Orloffs

Pics
It was a rough trip for them out of 14 eggs (7 orloff, 7 welsummer) 5 were broken.
9 went into the bator, 1 was clear on day 7.
8 went into lock down, 4 of each, and so far 5 have hatched, 2 of them being orloffs.
I think i heard tapping and chirping in another one this morning.
The way they were treated by the USPS had me thinking i wouldn't get any.
I feel very fortunate.

I got three dozen eggs from him ( Kummer Poultry Farm Erhard Weihs ) at a show here Washington on 3-19-20 They are hatching now.
Looks good so far

I just started noticing this breed and I have a few questions

1. It looks like the bantams of this breed have a very different body type that the LF, the bantams seem to have a more upright tail and shorter necks, am I looking at this correct?

2. The muff on these looks very different in pic that the muff on ameraucana's, it looks more feathery than the fluff the ameraucana's have.

3. Is anyone crossing orloffs with ameraucana's or are the body types and leg colors too different to cross these two breeds? the body's of the bantam orloffs seem to favor the Ameraucana body type??

4. Are orloffs closer to Aseels (don't know how to spell that)

sorry for all the newbie questions, but I got through the first 50 pages of this thread and decided just to skip to the end

1) I can't answer this well. The correct stature for an Orloff, I'd assume bantam or large fowl, should be more upright, gamey, and, to adress #4, kind of Aseel-ish.

2) A good muff and beard should be very full and fluffy and should be very similar whether Ameraucana, Orloff, or Faverolle. I've noticed the full spectrum in all three breeds, the smaller beards/muffs can often be associated with a less refined breeding program. (IE; hatchery stock, or a newer line that hasn't been fine tuned for some of the aesthetic points.)

3) I was very interested in the possibility of creating a spangled Ameraucana, but was shot down by the Ameraucana folks primarily on the basis of the Orloff's yellow skin.

Thanks for the information.

I was very interested in the possibility of creating a spangled Ameraucana, but was shot down by the Ameraucana folks primarily on the basis of the Orloff's yellow skin.

So is the yellow skin a dominate trait? I'd be more concerned about loosing the yellow legs that are the orloff standard. I was trying to think of a way to get blue into the spangling on the orloffs without loosing the other traits.

Orloff would be closer to Malay of all the oriental games.

You could get blue with yellow legs, you'd just have to outcross for it and then breed back to the correct type same as in any other breed.

I just thought I would say I love the speckled coloration.

Truly, I can't imagine a better camouflage color pattern for a chicken.

My girl scared me to death when she hopped out of the bushes today to see what treats I had. Even as she was running towards me she just looked like a little blur again the soggy spring brown background!
