Sad and grossed out :(

Unless folks start "yelling" and calling names, I think a healthy debate from educated chicken folk is great. I've had my mind changed many times listening to other people's perspectives.

You are right. I think I take things a little too personal at times. Anyway, this thread is great so far. Would love to learn more about purebred meat birds if anyone can chime in..

what do you call abuse?

Look up mercy for animals undercover sparboe farms video, and I know alot of the ppl on the meat birds section are not this mean but you would prob be shocked at how many meat farms are abusive.

I thought you was referring to BYC people being abusive to their meaties.
LOL

Guys I think some of you are taking me wrong, i have nothing against those people! I am actually GLAD that there are ppl out there willing to humanly raise a bird and eat it and know that it was humanly cared for! I just was under the perspective that BYC was for pet chicken, I didnt even know that there was a meat bird section, so it came out a lil shocking and gross to me.

"those people". Sorry I have taken much slack in real life about my chicken adventures. Chickens are great as friends but are also still livestock. I think that we as a society need to really know where our food comes from and own that we as consumers are a part of the cycle. If we don't want "factory farms" then we need to embrace those who are trying to raise meat respectively and actively strife to find the farms that do so.

I agree that there are big operations (and sadly some that have only a few and call them pets) who abuse their animals. I personally don't like it when the animals never get to have space to live. But I don't think it is fair to say it is a gross thing to butcher the animal. I think if you eat meat, like most of us do it is responsible to know the entire process of our food. Part of that process is death. I am still trying to get used to death with the birds and the rest of our pets (just had the family bunny die). While in butchering you chose the date and time and animal it is still hard, or at least it is for me. For me it isn't even me doing the deed but I am still hurt. But with that deep emotion I have greater respect for what is presented to me on a plate or what I choose to cook for my family. And while I am emotionally a bit more distant toward our roosters I am a better person and better flock master for knowing the butchering process.

mommyofthreewithchicks and The Red Rooster did you guys read all my posts?? if not then if you have time I do recommend it. Like I said, I HAVE NOTHING against the people that humanly raise chickens for food... NOTHING! I know that the people on BYC are ALOT more human than the battery farms!! All you out there who kill your chickens for food, please do not think that I am trying to throw you guys under the bus, I AM GLAD that you do what you do and dont support the grocery stores farms. I am sorry if I sounded like I was trying to say you were all horrible people, you are just as good of people as us if not better. The only reason I made this thread was because it was just a lil shocking to me that there was a meat bird section, when I was under the understanding that this was for pet chickens, and I was wrong and thats my problem.
