Sad and grossed out :(

Oh no, it's painful for me to even read these comments, but I mean I do understand they are chickens after all. I know some people hatch chickens just to find that perfect show chicken and kill the others. I hope they do at least raise them long enough to eat them (UGH I hate saying that) but I am in pain just thinking they are destroyed and tossed away because they were not up to someones standards. I personally have put one in the freezer but I have not gotten over it much less ate it yet. Some would say I should not raise chickens if I did not think I would be eating them somewhere down the line but I say to eaches own. As for my chickens, I pray they live a long, spoiled rotten life, eating me out of house and home, crowing to many sunrises, and have many, many baby chicks.

That is the whole point of the meat bird section. And I can bet there is not one person there who would ever think of killing a bird without respect in his or her intent. And that, my dear, is a major difference between our BYC meat section and a grocery store meat section. Unless you are a vegetarian, then you are in for a reality check.

Did you read the post above yours??

what do you call abuse?

Look up mercy for animals undercover sparboe farms video, and I know alot of the ppl on the meat birds section are not this mean but you would prob be shocked at how many meat farms are abusive.

Hey, but I went over there when I first got my chicks because I wanted to KNOW how to cull a chicken if it got hurt or sick and it was in pain and I wanted to make sure it didn't suffer! So I am glad I know but I sure don't go over there if I don't have to! LOL!

We posted almost at the same time. I did not read it until after, otherwise I would not have posed the question.

I suppose I am missing your point of this thread. Is it to say how horrified you are at a section of BYC... or... maybe point something out...

@mudsow

The only reason they get so big so fast is because they were purposely bred that way, and sadly alot of the chicks that hatch dont make it because of birth defects from being bred to be so big.

I am sad and grossed out by people not knowing where their food comes from. I am so disgusted by people telling me my homegrown food shouldn't be eaten because I knew it.

Seriously I respect my birds, I am sad when I have to butcher. I have not gotten over the killing process so I now take my birds to a butcher. I like eating meat I know what was fed and where it was grown. I like eating my own eggs. I was proud to share Thanksgiving dinner with those that I love, two home grown turkeys.

I don't look down on those who choose to make a pet out of their chickens, I have a few favorites myself. But I also made a promise to my hubby that my hobby would also feed us. What do you think of store bought chicken? Or beef? Or pork?

My chickens, so far, have been pets and eggs only. But since having chickens, I feel even worse when I eat some from the store, thinking how they were treated. So I have looked into a local processor, and this spring, I will begin raising birds for meat. I will take them to this farm, where they will humanely kill and process the birds for me.. I will raise them seperately and completely differently than I raise my pets/ egglayers and they will, in my mind, be for my food. I will be a little sad, but feel a whole lot better eating THEM than the ones in the store, who had god knows what kind of life.

If I can manage that endeavor, I will get my own Thanksgiving Turkey to raise and it will be wonderful to put it on the table, knowing that I raised it, happily and healthily, and then it fed me.

NONE of them will be named, unlike my pet chickens. They will not be held. They will be food. I'm told its different, so we will see.

I hope we can keep this thread civil. Wishful thinking?

I sometimes do wish that folks raised and ate more pure bred chickens instead of the cornish crosses. But until I can find someone that provides this I do eat humanely raised cornish crosses. I know the folks here on byc are caring and respectful people and would totally eat any of their birds.

But yeah, the minute they come into our yard they are pets and have names. Lol. I'm a hypocrit!
