Sadie (turkey) has a swollen head

I don’t know if that could cause sepsis. If you have the Baytril, you can use that, and I think it can be given orally. What strength is it. I know that Baytril 10% dosage is 0.05 ml per pound of weight twice daily for 5 days. The tetra hca is oxytetracycline and it also could be used, but the Baytril would be preferred.

The tetroxy hca-280 is oxytetracycline hydrochloride. I’m going to try to read the label, but it’s really confusing.

I don’t have baytril on hand. They only gave me filled shots to give him last year. I could take her to two possible livestock vets, but they are not very knowledgeable about birds. They look things up in a book. They also don’t give the right doses of medication when they give you doses or fill syringes. Everything has to be taken with a grain of salt. Baytril is controlled in the US, right? I don’t believe I can just buy it. If anyone can help me figure out the dosage of the oxytetracycline that would be great! I’d like to try it first and see if she responds to it at all.

Looks like there’s a range of doses. Some users here worked out the smaller dose as a little over a forth teaspoon. The larger dose is about 3/4 teaspoon. That’s to a gallon. So maybe I will halve that. Good to know there’s a safety margin. I hope this helps even if just a bit. If she declines, I will contact a vet. But I think if she does get very sick, I have a feeling she won’t make it. It was very hard watching my birds suffer after they ate coins. I don’t want to put her through that. If she gets worse, I want her suffering to be over. Her poop is great and normal. She’s been laying eggs. I’m going to try to be optimistic. She is a strong bird.

Sadie’s about the same today swelling wise. I noticed her tongue seems swollen. She was having a harder time swallowing than normal when she was eating a few pieces of canned corn. She is eating crumbled food (layer mixed with gamebird) like normal. She is drinking. I mixed a half gallon of water with a little less than a 1/4 teaspoon of antibiotic.

She is absolutely enjoying being in the house. It’s like a dream come true for her. She spent the night in the mudroom dog shower and roosted on the shower door overnight. I am very happy that she has the balance and coordination to fly up there and hold her balance.😃 That makes me optimistic. She’s resting more than normal. I noticed an occasional weird noise from her like a hungry stomach gurgling sound. It’s coming from her body and not like a noise she is choosing to make. Any idea what I can do for her feather infection area? Keep picking the pus out and flush with hydrogen peroxide? I can also use betadine or blue kote, but that will make the area change color and be harder to monitor. I have Chlorhexidine solution I could use as well. At first I said, “It feels like each hole might be about the size of the last digit (one with your fingerprint) of a human thumb.” I keep forgetting most people have normal sized hands! For most people, the sites might be as deep as the last digit of an index finger.

It’s slow but getting there. 1st picture is last night. 2nd picture is this morning. I don’t think it is MG or swollen head syndrome. She doesn’t look like any of those pictures. Neither include the snood being swollen. It’s not her sinuses that are swollen but more like all her tissue is inflamed. I’m betting she is reacting to a bite or sting. Of course, I could be wrong…I’m going to chalk it up to one of those fluke things.

LOL, she loves being inside! So glad that the swelling has gone down, and I would guess that it was a sting. I hope the wound punctures clear up. I keep hoping that one of the turkey people chime in about that. There is a turkey forum under “forums” at the top of this page where you can also post. Those holes look like teeth marks that have possibly caused an abscess.
