So great to hear about Sadie - I remember reading this story back when it first happened, but didn't realize there was the update - so glad I saw it, and so happy for her!

I guess you can say she is about as spoiled as a chicken can get. I first thought she would never eat chick feed again. I thought I would be cooking for her for the rest of her life but the better she felt that changed and she now eats SOME chick feed. Peaches is her favorite. She is eating her meals off my antique Mccoy dishes. What am I thinking?

Since her surgery on Sat. her appetite is down some. She is still eating and drinking but not as much as I would like. She acts as if she is mad with me but I guess that should be expected since she had her surgery. Whenever she sees me she still gives me the four peep, peep, peep, peep's she always has done since she has been hurt so that is something. Hopefully her appetite will pick up real soon. She lost part of her appetite right after she got hurt but quickly gained it back.

If we can make it through the next couple of weeks without infection we will be good to go and continue her spoiled chicken life. I do have plenty of meds though. Let me say this 'this has been the longest 29 days of my life." Every minute was worth it too.

New update: We changed Sadies bandages again last night. I was terrified like I am every time changing them as to what I might see but her remaining wing is healing up quite nicely. I wish I could leave the bandages off to let the injury get air but with her pecking the wound that is not possible so they will stay on right now. She has gained noticible weight and I couldn't be happier about that. Maybe its all the cooking I have done for her. lol We are not out of the woods yet but I definately feel like we can see it from here. Its day 37 today and Sadie has been the bravest girl I could imagine. Hopefully if there is no infection internally I can say there is a happily ever after. Thanks guys for all the support. I can not stress this enough. It has meant the world to me and Sadie.

I was going to pm you and then I saw your post on the other thread about the swollen eye. I had wondered how it all turned out. I knew you were going to be giving meds for a month but with this thing going on with Sadie its been hard to keep up. Please don't feel bad for not getting to the vet earlier, how were you supposed to know. Your birds problem sounded just like what we were all going through on the thread. He can live a good life with one eye. My dog just lost her eye to a freak accident so its just one of those things that happens. Who knows, even if you had gotton to the vet early you could still have the same results so don't beat yourself up about it. Take care and you guys are in my prayers.

Sara,
I'm so glad to hear your little Sadie is still doing well. You have had such a struggle with her.
That makes me feel better. I needed some good news today. It's been just awful trying to figure out how best to protect my birds from the menace that killed my sweet Henrietta last night.
Poor Dickie is still in bandages as well and will be for quite some time yet I am afraid. He seems to be doing fine but those broken pieces of his wing have not fused at all yet so I just don't know what's gonna become of it.
Have you decided what to do about your dog's eye yet. I dread that for you so much.

I hope it all works out for you. Just know you are in my thoughts and prayers.

I was so hoping for you to have better news about Dickie. I think in your situation time is what its going to take but I think maybe he will have some use of the wing. We can only have hope and pray. It was good news about your roo getting better and being able to go back outside. Boy is it hard with more than one hurt. As far as my dog Sweetpea I have been working with her eye and it looked for awhile that it would be good but its taken a turn for the worse. I'm sure the vet will want to remove it. Not a cheap surgery and here we are not knowing about Carlisle and when they will have anything up and running after the fire. This couldn't of happened at a worse time, it was just a freak accident. I've never seen anything like it before. With any kind of luck though I will be able to keep Sadie out of the vets so that is something. Hang in there. You guys are in my prayers.

To Sara and Sadie,

you both deserve an award.

for dedication and trust, I think you would have to go a long way find anyone that would go to such lengths to protect and care for a chicken, but you have shown exactly what BYC community is all about.

Oddballs that really do love their flocks large or small and will take that extra care of them.

I am so pleased that all your efforts have been fruitful and wish Sadie a very happy future which seems assured the way she is getting spoilt there with you. She has also shown courage in dealing with the injury and also been a lesson in trust.

Good for both of you, be proud of what you have done, it is a lesson to all.

best wishes,

Jena.
