My Rouen (first laying poultry so far) started building 2 nests in our barn two weeks ago, and has layed eggs 6 out of 7 days this week! :D
I have been so excited for this day- however she will not lay in the nests she built. I am buying fake eggs to try to coax her to lay in the nests, because she lays her eggs so close to her water all of them are muddy and wet.
I am wondering if they are still safe to eat? I have read it is unwise to wash the eggs due to their porous shell and it actually introducing bacteria into the shell. Since she is laying so close to the water and they constantly get wet and covered with mud- is there risk of this contaminating the egg?

Are they getting wet repeatedly? How often do you collect eggs?
Personally if you are collecting them every day and they don't sit in standing water I'd eat them.
I'd wash them first of course. :p

If it makes you feel better... we all get them from time to time. :D I put this one in a separate carton in the fridge and plan on eating it.

We collect daily and no standing water. How do you wash them before you eat them? Just warm water?

Thank you for the post!

Whatever gets the mud off. LOL Sometimes just water works. If it's more stuck a little soap usually works. If you're worried there might be poop on them use some soap. You're in the kitchen so dish soap is handy.

You're Welcome. Chickens do weird stuff. This won't be the last time they'll have you scratching your head.
