Safety Hole? Concerns

Ok. 43 hour after external pip update. I removed a little more shell in the air pocket only. I didn’t touch any of the inner membrane. I just used a bit of vasaline to moisten it. Baby is still breathing and chirping. He seems tired. I was surprised to see some pretty chonky veins, especially with it being almost 2 full days since he pipped externally. I’m definitely worried

I understand being nervous.. But this really seems okay to me. Baby is going to put in a whole lot of effort into hatching and needs to rest and to absorb all the way. My average time from pip to hatch was 42 hours, but I had ducklings take as long as 55 hours and be just fine 🤷‍♀️

Ok that definitely makes me feel better. The thick vein isn’t a big issue at this point though?

Hopefully you’ll see that vein start to thin out soon. Just keep that membrane moist and keep us posted 🤞I had a duckling pip before all the rest, and then also hatch around 50+ hours later. It was nerve wracking.

Here’s some photos of two I assisted. At the time of this, baby still had some minor veins, still chewing, the works.. she hatched 2.5 hours later.

This guy I assisted quite early, as he was behind the rest. Still huge veining, still chewing, of course. He hatched 15 hours later.

I suspect your baby will be between these two in time to hatch from now.

Thank you! Those photos are really helpful. This is where he is at now. I just moistened his membrane again. He’s still chirping but has started pushing his head out a bit. Hoping he doesn’t get over zealous and rupture a vein.

Oh, yeah, that 15 hour one I posted was doing the head pushing, too. Not quite sure what it is, maybe a stretch? But it wasn’t a problem for him. I love that big yawn!!! :love

Ok, about 20 minutes to the 48 hr mark and this is where we are at, I’ve been slowly chipping away at the shell where I can making sure to take no membrane away, thoughts?

Looks like the veins have reduced, no? Still not quite ready, though. You will know when he’s ready, I promise..

When it comes time for him to hatch, I’m guessing you’ll have to finish the hatch for him. If so, don’t rush it!! Zipping is meant to be slow, and it’s healthy for baby to spend some time and energy attempting to hatch. For mine, I very slowly chipped away shell over the course of 1 hour or more until baby could free themself.
