It's actually not all that strange to see a genetic variation like the one above. Scientists have actually found that it's easy to 'reverse engineer' chickens to their earlier state. Evolution has only granted them protiens that suppress their old genes, as in they never lost their inner dinosaur.

Scientist have gotten them to developed the claws that you see above, and some even get long bare tails with a little key protient suppression during their embryonic development.

Egyptian geese have that claw, but I haven't seen it in a chicken until mow.
