Sally's GF3 thread

There is a Blaines F&F in Walker Mich.
Not sure if that is where you are heading to town. This is the feed I purchased a couple weeks ago. I switched from Alflock to Layer,, because all my hens are laying now. I don't have any geriatric hens now. No roosters ether. Cant have in my area.
I'm also not sure when "Chick Days " start,,, so be extra careful walking thru the store browsing.:wee
21% feed is a great price, even with sale off.
I still offer Cracked oyster shells free-choice, as well as all my spent egg shells.

Thanks, @cavemanrich! 21% protein in a layer feed is !

I'm going to be right next door to TSC, so I'll stop there first. Walker, MI is "the other side of Grand Rapids" from me, but I'll be out that way next week. If I don't find something at TSC, I'll hike on over to F&F.

Dang, now I have their TV jingle stuck in my head! :gig

Watch out for the 🐥🐥🐥🐥!

I found a bag of 19% protein layer formula at TSC, $11.99 for 10 pounds. They have bigger bags, but this is just to try it out.

19% protein, 3.25-4.25% calcium. It's pellets, and I'm not sure my girls will like it in that form. So I'll use it to make "mash snack" for them.

They liked it! Yay! The oyster shell was in visible flakes. Interesting.

I don't know if ALL of the oyster shell is big flakes, or if there are smaller pieces. I picked out half a dozen of them, put them in a spoonful of feed, and gave that to Pip while she was on my lap. She picked up a couple of the flakes, dropped them, looked at them, then ate them. I think I'll look for a flaked oyster shell to give them on the side. I've never seen one that style. Anyone have any brands they can recommend?

There is less waste compared to crumbles. I would only choose crumbles for chick starter.
Interesting! Very little of my crumble feed gets wasted by the chickens. I feed it in those big black rubber bowls that you can get at TSC (and probably Blaines F&F too). The fine stuff that falls to the bottom of the bowl is saved for making mash snack.

I was wondering if they'd like the "bigger pieces" of pellets. As mash snack, it's ... mash, so just like they usually get.

I have the bowls in a "knock over and dump" proof set up. They sit in a food storage container, with a brick next to or under the bowl. They can't easily tip it over, and now that they're adult sized birds, they don't try to perch on the edge of the bowl either.
