Sally's GF3 thread

Hard to imagine anything growing in this weather.
IKR!! But those weeds were green and looked fine! They didn't look like the leaves had been frozen. No wilting, not even brown. I could not pull the roots out because the ground was frozen, but I could cut off the plant at ground level with the hoe. Then it sounded like I was scraping cement.

Some of the tops were as big as my palm. Mostly it was hairy bittercress.

We have winter weeds, summer weeds and year round weeds. Not to mention the very determined wild grasses.
One of these grasses tends to come up in the garden. 2 different times it was covered with 3-4 inches of snow this year. Snow melted, still it is unharmed and green. At least the chickens love it!

We have those, too. I have been digging up green broadleaf weeds for my flock. They even eat the roots!

When I've grown barley fodder in a dish, the chickens eat it, roots and all.

RIP SUNNY

This morning, when I opened the coop, I found my sweetheart lap chicken Sunny dead on the floor under the roost. I bawled like a baby. She wasn't even 2 years old.

Yesterday, she seemed perfectly fine. I petted her when I took them chickie snack in the afternoon. She is the only one who doesn't seem to mind my petting her.

I double bagged her and put her in the freezer. I'll bury her in the garden when the ground thaws. I could not do a necropsy. Just could not do it. Nor could I throw her out or in the burn barrel or leave her for a raccoon. Not my Sunny Bird.

My hens do not free range, and I have a roof over the run. If it's AI, I am the vector. I see no sign of anyone else being sick, so I don't think it's AI.

I took them chickie snack this afternoon and cried again because she wasn't there.

Fly high and free, my beautiful Sunny Girl.
