Today I went to hear a concert featuring the guy I used to take flute lessons from 40 (!) years ago. It's his last year with the Grand Rapids Symphony.

He and a harpist played Mozart's Concerto for Flute and Harp. Lovely, lovely piece, and beautifully played.

I went with his ex-wife, my friend "Judy who plays in the symphony," as she had an extra ticket and invited me. I was hoping we could see him afterward and say hi, but he had already left. So Judy texted him a picture of the two of us, and said, "Guess who came to your concert today!"

I will probably go to one of the Symphony concerts this season. I really want to say hi, and tell him he had a very positive influence on my life.

How special! I hope you get to see him face to face and let him know about his influence.

Lovely:

Here is some of the backstory to the piece. It was a commission by a Count or Duke (?). He played the flute, his daughter played the harp. He also wanted Mozart to give his daughter composition lessons as part of the deal.

The harps of that time were not like what we have today. Mozart didn't have one, and composed the harp part on the piano. It is a very demanding part, and the recipient was "taxed," as the conductor (who was relating this story) said. Mozart didn't think much of her compositional skills, either. The Count didn't want to pay Mozart after that remark.

So he never composed anything else for harp.

Finally some sunshine today! The warm temps are gone. We might not see upper 60s for a few months. Sigh.

I gave the chickens a pumpkin. I carved off the skin in 4 spots, about 3" in diameter. It did not take them long to get all the way through! No, didn't take pictures, dang. At lock up, there was a 6-7" hole on one side, and the other 3 holes were easily fist sized. Good for you, girls and boy.

We're going to North Carolina in a week. We're stopping by Pittsburgh, which is sort of on the way, if you consider that PGH is also south and east of Michigan.

DH has a college friend who lives there, and is dying of cancer. I've never met her, so she's really looking forward to seeing us both. It'll be a bittersweet visit, but one nobody wants to miss.

It will be a hard good bye, not knowing the chances of seeing her again.

I'm sorry.

What area of NC?

Charlotte. FIL and his wife live there. We usually go in early November. The garden is done, but it's not so close to the holidays that everyone has plans. One of my neighbors will chicken sit for me.

Unfortunately... we are arriving in NC on Sunday. There is a Panthers game. At home, in Charlotte. We will be leaving PGH super early, that's for sure. It's about an 8 hour drive, I think. If we leave at 5-6 am, we might not have to deal with the worst of the game traffic.
:fl:fl:fl

Sorry for the friend. Cancer is a nasty disease. Lost both my parents to it.
You and your DH are good friends to take the time to go visit. I hope your trip and visit goes especially well.

Charlotte is on the opposite side of the state from me. I am east of I95.

Most definitely try to stay away from the game traffic. I'm sure that would be a headache. I've driven through Charlotte before. Was interesting for this small town girl!
