O.M.G!!! I just checked that map! We moved from 5b to 6a!!!! :th

One of my life's goals was to be a zone 6er! Now I can still probably not grow ginger. Or olives. :gig

I'd love to be able to grow those two items. Anyone know if there are any cultivars that can handle zone 6?

I feel like I'm skating the edge with the loblolly pine seedlings we brought back from North Carolina. They had sprouted in FIL's gutter, and DH saved them when he cleaned the gutter out. I have them planted in a big bucket that is buried in the soil in one of my gardens. I'll transplant each into their pot next spring.

I also dug up a trio of redbud seedlings, which I have in another bucket. I love redbuds! In the spring, I will take a "back way" detour to the store to drive down a street that has several redbud trees in bloom. Honeybees like redbuds too.
I want to grow ginger, also. 5B here…I want to be just a little teensy bit warmer!

Last time I looked, I read that ginger needed zone 7. Or maybe even 7 and protection in the winter. I've thought about trying to grow it, and moving it into the green house for the cold months.

I used to use a lot of ginger in my homemade kombucha. Then the stuff in the store got kind of sketchy looking, so I stopped.

I just looked up making your own olive oil from fresh olives. Well, it's doable, but is a lot of work. I'd love to be able to try, anyway.

I moved a full point, from 7a to 8a. Little difference it makes to me, not gardening anymore.

Sadly, olive trees are like me. They don't like winter, ie, temps down below 20-30 F. Unlike me, those temperatures can kill them.

Wimps.
Ok, I'm sorry olive trees. That was mean. I will admire you still. I'm just sorry you're not able to visit me long term.

Ok, ginger... how about you?
[exit stage right to go google growing ginger]

Last night brought the end of an era. The group, Moxie Strings, played their last concert in Grand Rapids, MI. They have a couple more for this weekend in other towns in the state, then that's it.

This is from last summer, at the Meijer Gardens:

On the left, she's playing an electric cello. It can sound like a "regular" cello (cue the Bach), all the way to an electric guitar (cue Jimi Hendrix), and anything in between. On the right is a 5 string violin.

These ladies just knock it out of the park whenever we hear them. So sad they are moving on to other things in their lives. They did promise, "We'll see you again," so their is hope for a concert in the future.

Last summer, DH got some 10 foot, U-channel fence posts from where he works. They had built some (Covid related) signs for one of the local hospitals. When the hospital didn't need the signs any more, they said, nah, we don't want the posts. DH asked if I wanted them for garden fence posts. Uh, yeah. That took a millisecond to decide. That was about $1350 in posts! For free!

Well, they have more posts that another customer didn't want. Do we want another two dozen...? Hey, we have some cattle panel we don't need either. Want that?

Pinch me. I must be dreaming.
