Salmonella outbreak

well, we know we don't have to worry about eating eggs

I was wondering, how much does a recall cost the company who supplied the tainted eggs? Then how much does it cost the facility to have the updates for healthier birds?

Somewhere a long the lines, our healthcare that we can't afford became so cheap, its worth $1 eggs with the potential to get us sick or kill our children!? No thanks!

It's not just the tainted eggs that will set the company back. It will ultimately come down to them culling the entire flock of layers and starting over, which could potentially mean financial ruin for the company and is sad for the birds.

These types of outbreaks are caused by Pullorum and are controlled by proper yearly testing of the birds. Pullorum is slowly making a comeback (PA is one state that has seen an outbreak in the past year) as more and more backyard owners pop up. That is why it is important for these large companies to not be so lax on doing the Pullorum tests (better known as NPIP testing) they are required to do yearly.

When I went to get my NPIP certification to test birds here in VA, the state vet was saying that the disease at one point had almost been eradicated here in the U.S. because of the NPIP program that was put into place to monitor and test for it, but it is starting to make a comeback due to the increase of small backyard flock owners and them not testing. Due to the disease being so rare, there are some of the large companies that are being to lax in doing the testing properly and this is what happens. An outbreak that makes people sick. It's a shame that someone didn't do their job properly.

The key thing I'm saying when I'm asked about this outbreak...

When you take someone else's word for something you leave yourself open to... let's just say disappointment.

Whether that's buying a car, and ending up with a lemon.
(Can you say Ford tranny crapping out in ONE DAY, or how about the exploding Dodge?)

Or assuming name brand jeans will be well sewn, but then they rip right down the seat in public within a couple wears.
(yes, yes I did have this happen and haven't bought name brand/new jeans since)

And obviously the same goes for your food. If you assume that your safety is a business's primary concern... Well we all know what happens when we assume... things like this. Or the brilliants ones that after sewage flooding pulled a 'five second (okay day) rule" and just washed off the spinach and sent it out. Cost/Profit is the primary concern of a large business, particularly one with stockholders they're held accountable too. What's a little tummy ache compared to losing your job/being sued even for not cutting costs and boosting profits.

So far we 'grow our own' eggs... but still buy everything else... scares the snot out of me sometimes, but I do admit that it's my choice to do so. No one is forcing me to live in the city and depend on others for our food. If I really set my mind to it (and got permission from the landlord) I could raise more veggies and whatnot. Not enough to feed us all, but it'd make a dent. But, I haven't gotten around to it... I, not anyone else.

Don't get me wrong, I'd be majorly peeved if we got sick from something we bought. But, in the end what I put in my mouth is my decision... so a good portion of the mad would be directed at me myself and I(diot).

Hmmm... and this is what comes of reading/writing at 5:40am on less than 6hrs sleep and only one cuppa joe.

According to the news this morning in my neck of the woods, this farm has had several code violations in the past. Sounds like it's time to close the place down.

Yeah, but that would cost jobs (bad for an election year particularly in a recession) and cause commercial buyers problems (bad for donations) and whatnot...

They've passed SO much... expanded their domain so far... there just aren't enough hands to enforce the laws... rather like another topic that's raging right now... ahem.

You COULD get the funds to hire/manage properly... but you'd have to pull them from another area... the other area is a hot button item... one that could get or cost you votes... so... in order to keep your job, you fail to do your job.

*sigh*

We as a whole depend WAY too much on others, sic Uncle Sam, to take care of and provide for us.

Edit... Latest on Yahoo... How does Salmonella get inside eggs?

No, you are confusing two different serotypes of salmonella bacteria. In general, salmonella is bacteria that cause intestinal disease.

S. Pullorum is a disease of poultry, not people. It is monitored under the NPIP program.

S. Enteritidis is the bacteria that causes disease in humans and is the concern of this recall, but there are dozens of other types of salmonella that can affect people. SE is one of the most common.

Last year the the USDA wrote new regulations for SE prevention in the egg industry. They are to be fully implemented by 2012. It involves a prevention program that encompasses biosecurity, rodent and pest control programs, storing eggs at lower temperatures on the farm, and routine testing of manure samples for SE. The largest producers (over 50,000 hens) must implement the new plan by this year and the smaller producers (3,000 to 50,000 hens) by 2012.
