Do you honestly think that these companies and farmers with modern livestock operations really mistreat their animals? That is counter to providing an environment where the animals can produce eggs or meat as efficiently as possible.

Egads! I KNOW they mistreat/torture animals. Get the CD "Food, Inc." and do some searches online and see how utterly horribly animals raised for food and chickens are treated/kept by these so called livestock "operations". It is appalling to say the least!!

And you believe everything that comes from Hollywood and is on the Internet?

I, unlike you, have been in these barns. I've talked with the workers, owners, and managers. Their entire livelihoods DEPEND on these animals, why would they abuse them?

Like any industry there are problems, but a patched up video taken over 18 months with who knows what type of goading by the photographer, is not indicative of the entire industry.

Yeah, them vids are just snippets of the HOURS UPON HOURS of video that the undercover "rightests" have...I don't believe that any livestock company would knowingly allow an animal abuser into their folds...

I agree. I don't understand what all of the fuss is about. I approach all eggs as though they have salmonella, and properly cook them to kill bacteria.

Why is this such a big deal? Are there lots of people out there eating raw eggs?

People get sick because they eat their eggs sunny-side up and over-easy (I like mine almost raw, personally). They eat custard that is undercooked and hollandaise sauce (me too). Raw egg gets on counter surfaces in restaurants and homes, and the salmonella spreads to other foods being prepared on the same surfaces.

The FDA instituted new rules for increased testing for salmonella for poultry farmers that went into effect last month, and this month two huge operations were found to have salmonella outbreaks. Seems like a strange coincidence to me. One of these egg-farming operations is also under investigation under the Sherman Anti-Trust act for killing hens, reducing the number of chicks born, and exporting eggs in an attempt to raise the price of eggs at the supermarket.

It is difficult for all of us, including large egg-producing operations, to keep our chickens absolutely disease-free. Nevertheless, commercial producers are held to a higher standard, for good reason.

In a perfect world business people would act rationally and keep their animals healthy and well-cared for. In this country we relied upon that ideal until Upton Sinclair wrote The Jungle, exposing the practices of the meat industry. That's why the FDA was given broad powers to regulate our food industry- because business people did not behave in ways to assure their own long-term profitability and the health of their customers. Short-term profits generally trump long-term sustainability in the world of capitalism, which makes it dynamic and innovative, but also prone to disaster, like this egg recall, which will, sadly, probably destroy these businesses unless the taxpayers bail them out.

I definitely like my eggs "over easy" so I guess that is considered raw to some. My opinion is that there are people in this world that are NEVER exposed to anything as they go from their air conditioned homes, to the car (air conditioned) then into their workplace-also air conditioned, and to a restaurant to eat and then back home. Perhaps if more people were out in the air and digging in the dirt and experiencing the bacteria that are everywhere they wouldnt get sick when a little old Salmonella gets in their food. This particular operation has been fined for repeated environmental issues, knowingly hiring illegals, EEOC violations including rape and animal cruelty. Not painting all factory farms w/the same brush but when you consider ONE farm distributes MILLIONS of eggs over a few weeks time, you have to realize their shortcomings have huge ramifications.

I hope I am not changing this thread too much. I just read an article about the causes of salmonella in eggs. One cause it mentioned was fecal material getting on the egg in the nest. If you raise chickens in the yard you know this happens from time to time. One is also told not to wash and egg because of the protective coating. My question is, what do you do with an egg with fecal material on it, toss it, wash it, what.
Thanks

Those are the ones I use immediately - wash it and use it. Bake something, make an omelette, boil it.

I just wanted to mention that when I watched a show on How It's Made about batteries, the one they did their story on was extremely clean, plenty of room for the hens, fresh feed and water 24/7. They did however keep the lights on 24/7 also. But it was a good battery and the hens were well cared for.
