San Diego Chicken meetup and Chat thread

Hello all,
this is DonaldFan under a new alias. I got a new computer but couldn't remember my byc password. Waiting for the email reminder/password change was taking too long so just made a new one.

We had a sad week last week. Donald's mate Daphne passed away mysteriously and the other older Drake that hung out with them passed away a few months ago. The girls from my other Drake's flock are keeping him company but I need some more duck hens before Spring. Don't want fighting drakes. They are mellow enough for now but by Spring the duck yard get's locked up to keep the boys apart. Does anyone have any duck hens that need a good home, know of a reputable feed store that sells ducks, or a good hatchery to purchase from? I like the idea of having ducklings first so have them imprinted since Donald is the only imprinted duck I have.

Thank you,
Jenn, aka, DonaldFan, aka, DuckL80

Our first egg from our ladies! I'm assuming it was Lydia because she is our EE girl. I think it freaked them all out, when I went in the den it was sitting in one of their spa craters and they all had their beaks open looking around like "It wasn't me, was it you?' It is a pale sagey greeny blue, quite colourful!

Is anyone having problems with hawks? I have 2 of my full grown bantams disappear? I have noticed the hawks around all the time now.

I had 3 two month old chicks disappear a month or so back. I had 2 eagles and one would swoop over at 5 feet. Also saw a cat jump the fence and missed twice while we were watching. The cat is gone and the eagles have stopped flying over. I built an overhead over part of the yard. The chicks still run for cover at even an airplane. I hope you find the culprit.

I had a red shoulder snag my little sussex a couple months ago, but she wasn't the brightest hen and I think the hawk waited till I was inside. Then a big red tail swooped in on my biggest meanest SLW a few weeks ago, but as it turns out the hawk picked the wrong chicken. Chicken-1. Hawk-0. After that I stung up lines of cd's crisscrossing as much space as I could. So far, so good. I seen a few red shoulders since then, but they've been staying away.

I would be happy to host another meetup in early April:) we had a good turnout here last spring....
That was a fun meet up last year! Nice of you to offer :) Can we plan it at the end of March? Hopefully get some pleasant, milder weather. Whatever date you pick, let us know and I'll put it on the calendar. It'll help me decide whether or not to let my broody's sit on any eggs too.

None of my SFH are laying right now. I do have some crosses I can put under my current broody. I have a SFH roo covering a Spitzhauben as well as an Easter Egger. Anyone think those would be cute combos? I don't want to keep any so I'm putting in orders right now. :p  I'm tempted to put my frizzle/NN (covered by a Serama) under her. What to do......

Sooo I'm browsing ebay and I see two fertile emu hatching eggs with a starting bid of $0.01 and of course me being me I put a bid on (its got two days). Unfortunantly my incubators are too small for emu eggs

I'm sure someone will outbid me but on the off chance I win them would anyone be willing to hatch two emu eggs for me
