San Diego Chicken meetup and Chat thread

Sooo I'm browsing ebay and I see two fertile emu hatching eggs with a starting bid of $0.01 and of course me being me I put a bid on (its got two days). Unfortunantly my incubators are too small for emu eggs

I'm sure someone will outbid me but on the off chance I win them would anyone be willing to hatch two emu eggs for me

I would pay you in chickens for your time

Being so big, shipping is super super hard on Emu eggs. Happy to give them a try but I would not hold your breath about chicks. Best get eggs locally.

My problem has been the coyotes in the middle of the day. The coyote will dig under the fence and grab a bird while my dogs nap. My neighbor had six hens killed and the coyote didn't run away. They were running a gas weed wacker and it was 20 feet away. I can't believe they are starving as I see rabbits and squirrels all over.

Thanks, but I already got outbid

I didn't get my hopes up or anything, I just figured with it being so cheap if they didn't hatch I could just blow them out or something. There is an emu/ ostrich farm by the "sandeigo zoo sarari park" That I like to get decrotive eggs from, maybe one day I'll see if they ever sell hatching eggs

chickens taste better

In the Philippines we have issues with dogs. I have cinderblocks under my coop walls and netting. It is 100% effective against diggers

When we built our run, I got some 3' high rabbit fencing off craigslist. I put it over the chain link fence post, laying on the ground entirely, before they attached the chain link to the posts. Now I see coyote poop outside my fence and have see their dig marks all around but when they hit that fencing material, that was layed down, they stop digging. Hope that helps.

Currently, we have no problems with predators with the current chicken run. (Which is to be modified in the near future anyway). Our main concern is cats who sneak into the house and pick up the baby chicks from the brooder.

They've never gone head to head with my Sex-Link hen or my JGxSilkie roo and come out victorious, so we're okay for now.

I'm so sorry for your lost bird. How bold those coyotes are for being so close to humans. I've heard when they lose their fear of humans all it takes is some traps or sharp shooting to get them scared and think twice. That is hard to do though. Much easier said than done.
