San Diego Chicken meetup and Chat thread

I never order from them before, how much do they charge for shipping?

I cannot find any locally either, I thought maybe they would have some outside the city limits.

No, it was a total of $18. It is $7.00 if you do not have a full box which would be 100 chicks and 15 cents per bird, and $1.00 fee per variety.

This will be my first time buying from Ideal. I have purchased from Mcmurray before. They do have the 3 varieties that your friend wants though.

The feed stores near me are getting one more order in next week and they said that will be it for awhile.

I guess it was too late last night and I was not too sharp. If your friend does not care about variety or only wants 1 or 2 varieties then Ideals prices are great. The actual bird is cheaper than Murray too. Murray's shipping is $16.00 but they do not charge for picking the different varieties so if you wanted alot of different kinds then they would be the better bet but it is slim pickings right now.

Or if your friend is not picky, and if they want 25 birds they could get the package deal at Murray's. Depending on what they want them for. For example, if they want 25 brown egg layers, they will just put what is left after the orders are placed and it cost $49.00 for 25 birds. Plus the $16.00 for shipping and it comes out to $2.65 a bird which is cheaper than the feed store.

Or they could wait until early spring and split an order with us...

You may be right. I think it should be okay. Just more lights and more work. I am buying pullets and have never raised them in the winter but I felt that they could grow and do their 5 months and then in early spring I will have eggs. Time will tell. It will be a learning experience.

YEAH! If they do not want to deal with it now then they could order in the Spring. I am hoping to get a few more that were not available now.

I have a question about feed. I have been buying stuff for the anticipated arrival of the chicks and about 2 weeks ago I purchased Organic Chick Starter from Kruse's. It was HOT those few days and all of these bugs were coming out of the bag. I called and they said it is no big deal but if I wanted to I could switch it out.

I was reading and I hear people feed Purina and they have a Start & Grow and I can get it pretty locally. Closer than the Kruse's - Modesto Milling Organic kind. Has anyone here had any experience w/ the Purina Start & Grow and Layena? Just curious about it. With my last round of chickens which was awhile now, I used Kruse's Feed but not the organic kind. Thanks for any input.

I have use Purina one time and it seem ok. I feed Layena layer to my ducks and she lay an egg every day.

I am using Nature Wise now and my Barred Rocks are growing fast. It is not organic but do they really need organic ? I mean everything else we eat are not organic.
