Glad your injured pullet is doing well. I didn't realize you didn't have any chickens at the first meet up! That's very funny! Have you done an actual count or do you avoid that?
If you wanted olive eggers you should have told me and I'd hatch out some of these turkens for you.

Hey, are the scruffy girls looking better these days? I have an EE that I put in a pen by itself for three weeks thinking she'd get her feathers back but no sign of them. I'm stumped.

I'll be up at the Norco meet up so hopefully I'll see you there.

Allison, Thank You! I am hopeful she will make a full recovery. I am keeping the scruffy hens offspring away from her.

I think the first meet up was in September of last year. I had chickens in the past but decided I wanted to get into it again and wanted to go to a meetup. What the heck was I thinking??? There were not any my way and that is why I ended up in San Diego. So yes, I had ZERO chickens at that meet up.

I am breaking the law with just the pullets so YES I try to avoid counting. HA! I will just leave it at ALOT. Mostly chicks so I doubt they count, right?

Well, the scruffy hens looked great when you brought them to me. I had both of them in a cage for quarantine and then left them in there. I think they molted. The rir looks good now. They are taking turns I guess. The BO looks the sh*** though. She kept rubbing up against the wire wanting food and she looks like a Naked Neck now.

They have settled down and the feathers are no longer flying in the coop. They looked disoriented for a couple of days but now seem fine. The BO is always looking for handouts.

I will most likely be at the Norco meet up so it will be nice to see you again.

I am so glad the Delaware is doing better... I love a happy ending!

So I just had to run out and buy a little chick starter, since I didn't think the babies would wait until Saturday to eat.

I gave them some, and they dived right in. So did mama. She got up, and I can see that she still has one green egg and one brown egg under her. She is still tucking them underneath her... how long should I wait before I take these eggs away? Today is Day 21.

Craftchicken, my broody is a White Rock. It looks like one of the chicks is really hers, although I can't tell any of them apart quite yet. Daddy is either a Speckled Sussex or Colombian Wyandotte.

Dana

Dana, She still wobbles around not 100% but I will take it. I was so worried about her and like I said it was split seconds and I do not know what my dog did exactly. I know she was not trying to kill her because it would have been done already if that was what she wanted. Maybe dragged her down from the ledge? I am just happy that it turned out good. I was dreading the thought of what I had to do if she was not well.

Have food and water for mom and chicks. Use a quail waterer or put marbles in the regular kind so the little ones will not drown. I like to use the quail ones for a week until they know better and then I switch it out.

Can you candle the egg while mom is busy? Or at least put it up to your ear and tap. If today is day 21, I would wait. Mom usually knows best and they will usually toss it if it is not viable. If mom is tucking it under her then it is a good sign. Trust her instincts.

I honestly did not know White Rocks go broody. I know Buff Orpingtons and Silkie Bantams always wants to be moms but White Rocks???? I learn something every day.

Really?? Buff Orps?? Mine do nothing but complain all day!! And good lord, if there is an egg to be had, the whole neighborhood knows!!
And then its off the nest and "Where are my treats? I just laid you an EGG gosh darn it!!!"

With that said, I do love my Buff Orps. They will always have a home here!

Mama is still tucking those eggs in, so I guess I'll give her a little longer with them. All of the little fuzzy butts had hopped out of the nest box and were exploring the little area I made for them. (I put a big sponge in there as a step to get back into the box.) Everybody seems to be eating well, and growing.

Another "duh" question: if I get some chicks from Miriam/Phage on Saturday, can I just add them to the existing chicks? Do I need to wait until nighttime or anything like that? I don't want to stress mama out.

Dana

PS - Cari, did you get your check? Our mail has been awful lately!

I would just pop them under her after dark. Make SURE they are pretty close to the same age.

And YES! got it today, thank you!

Order is due to come in tomorrow so anyone that wants/ needs to come pick it up from my house tomorrow eve is welcome to!

Trying to pick this thread up from PAGE 2.

I would try to have them the same age if possible. Do it in darkness or have mom distracted and plop the babies in the nest. I would be worried about the unhatched eggs at this point. They will be sitting in the cold while mom is tending to her new family. Any pips yet? I would highly recommend candling or float testing them at this point. I would no longer trust her instincts.

Hi everyone! Are you still planning on meeting up at Lake Murray tomorrow? I have to call in for work, so I may not make it. Will there be anyone there around 3 O'Clock? I even bought the brownie mix and everything, too. I didn't know I would have to work until today.

Oh well.

There's a few families with ducklings there in case anyone's interested in looking for them.
