I don't think it has all the right proportions of stuff.

Yes, I use it......but I mix it.

Right now my birds are fed a mix of Scratch, Lay crumbles, Premium Wild Bird Seed(that includes safflower&Boss) and Rabbit pellets. In this ratio (in scoops), 2:1:1:1. I would never feed the rabbit pellets as the only source of food.

During the molt I substitute the Lay for Game Cock mix. Plus, a weekly treat of dried cat food.

Plus, year round, I feed sprouted seeds(I use the wild bird mix) and I also visit my local produce wholesaler once a week for left over seasonal veggies.

My birds are spoiled! But, hey, I figure I am reaping the benefits when I eat the eggs and eventually start inviting them over for dinner;)

Yeah I thought she meant solely fed rabbit food.... I'm sure mine eat any spilled from the bunnies and it probably would be a good supplement. Mine also eat hay and grass.

I wasnt sure. Most my birds are unfortunately confinded so getting them those extra sources of vitamins, minerals, etc are important to me. I would like to start feeding the the Kelp meal. I dont know what it look like is it in a MASH type form?

One thing i dont hear poultry folks doing is feeding sprouted seed . When I raise exotic softbills (finches, canaries, etc) this was a big deal. Sproud seeds provide a host of digestable essential vitamins, minerals and some trace minerals for the birds depending on how soon you feed the birds the sprouted seeds. I guess I just feed it because I know it can only help them rather than harm them.

Hey SD_Paulo,

I feed my chickens sprouted seeds and grains almost every day to supplement their layer feed. So far I've sprouted oats, wheat, lentils, BOSS and mung beans. They love them. And you're right, it is really nutritious for them. If you're interested, there is a fairly active thread about sprouting for chickens.

Oh, and regarding kelp meal, the stuff I have is not as fine as powder, but finer (more fine?) than small flakes. Sort of like freshly ground black pepper or so.

I am curious.... Can you feed Kelp gathered right here off the coast..... You know those big strands that wash up on the beach.... Dried of course.

just curious....

I know a few other people who feed kelp and swear by it.

I believe the kelp here on our beaches is a different kind/ species of plant.

I would also be worried that the kelp here has contaminations sine the sewage treatment outlets right into the kelp fields...

Nope, I didn't mean as a sole source of food.

A couple of posts later I write:

"Somewhere here on BYC I read that it's given in place of greens when chickens can't get out to free range. Makes their yolks deeper in color. Just curious."

I guess I needed to clarify that I mean it as a supplement to fresh greens, or a treat, when fresh greens are not readily available.

Actually the sewage is vented about five miles off the coast. at the edge of a shelf.... I believe. I could be wrong. The Kelp harvesters that work around Point Loma process that Kelp into a powder to be used in everything from lipstick to ice cream. I know when it dries it is paper thin. .... just thinking out loud...
