San Diego Chicken meetup and Chat thread

Thanks Deb for all that great info. 40 bags is a lot of feed, so unless it is split up among several people it just is not practical, not to mention that different people want a selection of different feeds anyway.

Hey I have a question. My place is eighteen acres up in the area of Jacumba. Its high desert and not really zoned for anything agricultural. The minimum lot size is 10 acres most are 20 or more.

I went up there today to feed My horse goats and Chickens and I saw unfamiliar tire tracks on my road. Now I can recognize Border patrol and my ex roommates tires. My neighbor came over to tell me that the Department of Fish and game had been up there....

Any thoughts of what they might have been looking for? I am scratching my head here. They didnt leave a notice or anything.

Maybe they were looking for large cats...if it's known that you have animals that would attract large cats. My best guess.

Quote: Well I have heard Mountain lion screams in the canyon behind my house..... But that was over five years ago. Or maybe they were told I had some wild game up there. My guineas are pretty vocal. Or I was hoping they werent there to count my Roos. I have four adults and five Juvies.

Animal control come around last year when i moved my horse up there. Someone had turned me in for having a skinny horse and a sick goat. I talked with the officer and he had no problems with my charges. Baby girl Katee gits 120 lb bale of Bermuda every three days and the four goats get a whole bale of Alfalfa and they eat on that till its gone. No one is skinny on my watch.

It all makes me feel as if someone is turning me in an effort to cause me trouble. It doesn't help that I don't live there right now either. My own insecurities showing up now. sigh.

Deb, people have turned in sightings of Mtn. Lions that have turned out to be mastiffs....and people have turned in their neighbors because their rooster is crowing all day when it's actually a hen song....I wouldn't worry about it. Someone probably did hear the guineas and thought someone or something was being tortured behind those walls.

Hey Cari! Could you let us know (approx) how much the bales would work out if your flat bed was full? I could not find a price list anywhere on line. Also......Just noticed this in your sig line... Does this mean you can get (us) feed at a reduced rate??? :D :fl Cari J. www.whitemountainsranch.org Working on a sustainable farm Authorized Retailer for Modesto Milling Organic Feed! Need to find some way to reduce the feed bill. I met some one at the Norco meet up who said that if purchased in BULK it was WAY WAY cheaper. I don't think it would come in bags though.
Unfortunately ALL the retailers get charged the same price, no matter what. It's only if you have your resale license that you would get it for SLIGHTLY less, and I do mean slightly, it's like a dollar less per bag or something. (Which I HAVE been thinking about doing)... but then you have all the shipping fees/ lift gate fees etc to add back in... Modesto IS expensive. The only way we could get it for less is if we DID do the 1 ton pallet. It's basically a HUGE 2000 pound bag of ONE type of feed that we would have to find someway of getting it off the truck and then we would split it all amongst ourselves with bags/ buckets/ trash cans/ etc... just don't think it's feasible since everyone wants different kinds of feed. Instead of being about $1200 per pallet I think it's about $800 so we would save some cash there...

LOL..... I do have one new neighbor probably one of three that know my house is here. I met her for the first time just a couple of months ago on the road we stopped and chatted. She asked me if I had Turkeys because of all the noise. I laughed and said no and we chatted a little about shared property lines and fence All good. Those subjects can get really touchy up here. She did complain about the Wolfs getting on her property and threatening her little Shitzus. Hmmm I wonder. There is a gal that has a couple of wolf hybrids that lets them run occasionally.

She and Tom and Mike are the only ones that would know about my poultry. Mike has been here thirty years or more hes friendly on the road but does NOT want visitors so I have never been to his house. Tom acts as my occasional Caretaker. Each of us have more than ten acres. But because of the lay of the land I could stand in my front yard and Yell help and all three would probably come running.

There is one rock lined canyon that runs perpendicular to the road where I have heard Mountain lion but its a perfect avenue for big dogs to scope out places to hunt.

deb "who needs fencing reallllllyyyyy bad"

We have Mountains Lions here too. I saw one walking across the side of the hill, on the other side of the little valley my house sits in, a couple months after we first moved in here. I was really worried about all the predators but since we have the big dogs they keep all the bad things away.

Now I just need to figure out how to get rid of the mice, rats, squirrels, rabbits, gophers, rabbits, and ravens.
