San Diego Chicken meetup and Chat thread

Ok, as promised, here are the photos of my completed Chicken Villa! I ended up getting rid of the litter boxes full of pine shavings. The chickens kept knocking them over anyway, so the pine is just all over the vinyl now. I'm probably going to ultimately change the purple shelter thing i'm using for the nest box. It's a bit flimsy and when a chicken sits on it, it smooshes down.

Enjoy!

Thank you for this link. I followed the link to the home page and perused the different products and got an actual description of a product called Neat and Tidy.

I finally found my goat houses. What I want is something with a floor and these do, WITH a drain. I have two Nigerian Dwarfs and one Pygmy. And they are big babies. I have several climbing structures for them, they really beat them up. I love the molded construction it is VERY robust, but goats are like little tanks with fur.

If the base is all one piece they will have a very hard time disassembling the rest. Especially if I use locking screws and plywood reinforcement for the roof. Craigslist has a couple too. I could put two in the pen and create a roof between them then they all three would have a place to get out of the snow and rain. I have a spare stall mat I could put in the middle.

Oh I am soo excited.

Where did you get your nigerian dwarfs? We will like to get a doe (milking or a pregnant one) and a young wether for next summer at a reasonable price.

vannaHaines, you did a terrific job on your Little Tikes coop. I really like the style too. That was a great find!

Are those NN chicks that you got at the meet up from Gail? Very cute. You'll have to keep post pics as they grow.

I was lucky. I actually already had that playhouse. My mom had bought it for my daughter when she was 3 and now that she's 6, she really doesn't play in it anymore. She gave me permission to make it into a chicken house.

Yup, I got both of those naked necks from Gail. The frizzled I got at the meetup, the non frizzled I had purchased from her several months ago.

They are the cutest things. The non-frizzled my daughter named Stuffing. The frizzled I named Swiffer Duster. *giggle*

I adopted them from a Navy family in Chula Vista. They were bottle fed and raised in a suburban back yard. They had never been outside their own back yard when I brought them up to my eighteen acres in the desert. Ducks to water..... LOL. Look on Craigslist. There are a couple of breeders in Ramona I believe. I hear their milk is much higher in fat content and for their size produce a boat load of milk.

My little dew drop (rip) was the teeniest she came only to just above my knee never was bred. Yet at her third year developed a full sized udder it almost touched the ground. I am told this is rather unnusual but not unheard of. Of course she had no milk.

Keep looking you will find a source.

The peach jam is delicious! inspired me to start canning, I have made pickles and salsa from our garden since the meet up. also working on my website, wish I knew more about building a website! Also selling off some of my flock so I can only raise pure breds in the future.
